The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Good morning group,
I was hoping I could get some of your expertise on this hen before purchasing. I was told she was a welsummers hen and is $30 a far price? From the picture I know her comb is a little odd and cant check for yellow feet. So would you please give me you opinion on this hen?

Thanks, your time and help is greatly appreciated.

$30 is fair for laying hen with 4 chicks....unless you have your heart set on an SOP Wellie.
But I'd ask to see a pic showing her breast and legs(that sounds a bit pornographic).
Looks like she could be a mix and I'd ask for a pic of the sire too.
What is the reference to '(buckeye)' in the ad title?

Thanks aart, no not looking for a SOP Wellie just a good egg layer. She's about a year old. The reference to Buckeye is the city.

Thanks.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts! As a chick she had the caterpillar stripe on her head and back, and that beautiful and striking eyeliner mark. So far I've found that Wellys look like that, as well as red sexlinks and some Easter eggers, the red sexlink thread said she is not one of those, everyone here is agreed that she is not a welly, so I guess that leaves us with Easter egger. Can she still be an EE with no cheek puffs? She also has tail feathers and yellow legs, so can she still be a cross?

Easter Eggers are a grab-bag of genetics; they can look any way at all!

With most hatcheries you're right, but some people would argue with that. Easter Eggers came before Americuanas, they were bred to a standard. Some people correctly refer to their Easter Eggers as 'non-standard Ameracuana' because they are just as purebred as Ameracuanas, just don't fit the 'standard'.

@jaetawright Not all Easter Eggers have muffs. Mine all do have green legs. Two have muffs and lay light green eggs, one doesn't, and is real small buff colored, maybe bantam and lays dark olive eggs.
One other one I have doesn't have a muff and lays in the right light a very large blue egg, not sure what she looks like;

Holy moly my wellie is so loud! She is beautiful and just started laying (my buff orphington and Ameraucana layed 8 whole weeks before her...) but if she doesn't calm down my neighbors likely won't let me keep my other 4 hens.
Any suggestions?
I've tried cuddling her when she's loud but the second I put her down she's loud again. She's loud when she's not near the other girls. She's loud when she lays. She's loud in the morning.
Help!
Thank you :)

My Wellie is about a year and she's so loud too! We finally were able to sleep with the windows open last night and at 5:45 she's out there singing! The sun is not even up yet and she in the run yelling her head off. My neighbors are going to kill me so if she doesn't pipe down she'll have to go :( is this a breed thing or do we just have chatty girls?

I have two 5 week old Wellie pullets and two roosters (they flew in under the disguise of little females when we got them proving that the eyeliner can sometimes fool ya!) All four of them are much quieter than our Buff Orpingtons. Their vocalizations are softer than the others but they are still pretty young birds so time will tell.

Are you talking about a regular 'hen' song that they sing before they lay an egg and then loudly exclaim their accomplishment afterwards with the other birds joining in? Or are they just making a lot of noise in general?

I'm getting ready to move our youngsters into their coop. I just have some finishing touches to make on their permanent home, latches, hinges and the like. They have out grown their brooder and adjacent pen that I have set up for them. I've been spending some time just observing them and the dynamics of their little flock of 12 birds and I'm noticing that one Wellie male is working hard to set himself up as the dominate cock in the flock even at 5 weeks. He will pull himself up on tiptoes so he towers over the other males and gives them a little peck. I've also observed him doing the same thing to the females only instead of pecking them, he puts a foot on their backs and pushes them to the ground, then lets them up. Beau is going to be a beautiful Rooster when he matures but I'm wondering if it is SOP for these roosters to be dominate over other roosters in a flock?

In general, the four Wellies have been very docile and sweet birds to have around. When they get treats, they will stand back from the Buffs and wait their turn at whatever I have in my hand for them. I usually have to offer them a 'bite' as they will just stand back and let the others feed first.

As to the noisy hens. If they are just singing. They are happy birds. It would be hard to keep a happy bird quiet.

My wellie can be loud when she has something to say. Her egg song is long, and she has a special song she sings when someone goes missing from the flock. She doesn't make constant noises, but I know when she's talking.
