The Welsummer Thread!!!!

can anyone recommend me some good breeders on here? i just ordered a new batch of chicks (2nd this year oops! lol) from ideal but I would like to get some nicer quality welsummers

I don't ship and it's too far to drive unless you have reason to be in Philly for other things (if you do, PM me). Mine came from Whitmore Farm in Thurmont, MD, and I can highly recommend his stock. They do ship (25 minimum of course), but they are not always available. You might contact them to see if they are doing some fall hatches this year.

I'm not sure where else to ask this question, but I really would like some Welsummer pullets someday. However, everywhere I have looked they only sell straight run. Is there a reason for this? I've looked on-line at many different places and my local feed mill that sells chicks and even rural king only will sell them in straight run. Does anyone know of a place where I can just get females? I already have one rooster and don't want any more. I can't stand having to think of selling a rooster, knowing they are probably going to be butchered.

Thank you for any help you can give!

Oops, never mind. I did another search and did find a couple places. They have a minimum of 25 though, unless I want to spend like a $100 for 5 chicks, so I guess my Welsummers will have to wait. Not sure I can afford those prices. Sorry for the post!

Maybe you don't want to be told this, but every female chick purchased means that a male chick was hatched and probably killed (humanely).
If you can't stomach the idea of some chicks dying because they are the wrong sex, you're going to have a problem with chickens in general.

There are some hatcheries that will sell Welsummer pullets, but you will probably need to buy direct and there are usually minimum orders. You might also be able to find a local breeder who will sell sexed chicks or started pullets, but Welsummers are not common anywhere. Check out the Welsummer club (link a few posts up, the "for sale" forums here, and of course, Craigslist.

I'm sure you are correct about the males being killed, I've heard the horror stories. But just because it happens doesn't mean I want a front seat, or I want to personally had a male off to someone to kill it. Kinda like capital punishment. Just because it happens doesn't mean I want to watch it.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss!

FYI - I found a couple places that do sell pullets. Once place isn't too expensive so next spring I will probably go with them. They are online and called Cackle Hatchery. They have a small city town order where you can buy 3, 5, or 10 pullets.

Meyer Hatchery in Ohio also sells sexed Welsummers, and I think their minimum order for shipping is 3 (although I am only a couple hours away so I always drive there to pick up). Just a word of caution--even most hatcheries only guarantee that their sexing is 90% correct. Meyer has done a bit better than that in my limited experience--they got 12 out of 13 right for me so far. Unfortunately, the one they got wrong was my Welsummer this spring, so I had to find my little roo a new home through Craigslist. The good news is that he was able to go to a nice home where he will get to be part of the flock, not part of a meal, and that I actually had a few people who were interested in taking him for their backyard flocks since he was a Welsummer and they are not so common to come by. I would definitely recommend taking a look at Meyer--we have been really happy with our hens from there over the last 6+ years.
