The Welsummer Thread!!!!

This is my male Wellie at 5 weeks, see his wattles coming in?

I'm trying so hard not to laugh at this picture! What happened to him? He looks like how I feel when I've had a really bad day & people are staring at me

@aart Wow! He's beautiful! Makes me second guess getting rid of the 6, YES SIX roos that I believe I have out of the straight run of 10. Lost one, probably most definitely a pullet LOL! And now I have 6 cockerels and 3 pullets.

Well, it's official...I have 6 Wellie roos and only 3 hens

I hate the thought of culling all of the roos?? I'm uneasy about how they will all get along with my BO roo. Guess we'll see. I don't have the ability to keep them separate. I think I will try to rehome them.

I'm happy about my 3 girls though!

They are becoming really pretty!

I am starting to think this is going to be a cockerel year!

My first hatches were mostly pullets, which of course I sold. ......thinking "there will be plenty more in the future". The hatch I kept for myself......nursing the incubator through three power outages......turned out almost all boys.

I have a couple more hatches lined up, so we will see what comes out of it. And I have my first broody Wellie, which I am excited about......she is sitting on a bunch of eggs of various breeds and my fingers are crossed she stays with them.

Good luck with the broody! That's so exciting!! Crossing fingers for no more Roos for you ;)

Hi! My Wellies are approaching 30 days old and I'm wondering if I can get some advice about moving them to the coop outside. Some of the books I have read say 30 days and some say 60 days and another said 90 days! Lol I'm so confused....

I was in your shoes a year ago. It really depends on feather development, but you also have to consider integration if you have other chickens. So they need to be safe and warm, whether just by their own heat source (feathers) or a lamp at night (a regular bulb can provide some heat), etc. I would search BYC for articles on the subject as there are many ways to go about it. Some people have the chicks out by 2 weeks, some 2 months, but I think about 4 weeks is more average, again depending on feathers. Hope that helps :)
