I have tried several breeds including RIR, Delawares, BO's, etc. They were all good birds but I really wanted some dark brown eggs. I read about Welsummer's and thought I would give them a try. I had looked at Henderson's chicken chart which stated that you could expect approximately 3 eggs per week. So, I thought I would keep some for ornamental use. Henderson needs to re-evaluate the Welsummer's ability to lay eggs. I have 7 pullets that starting laying two months ago and have been consistently giving me an average of 5 eggs per day. That's a five egg per week average. Just as good as my RIR's and Delaware's. In fact I sold my RIR & Delaware's when I realized the Welsummer's were not just ornamental. They are also extremely docile and easy keepers. I love them! I didn't think there was any breed that would come between me and my Delaware's, but the Welsummer's did. I also have some eggs in the bator due to hatch Dec. 27th. Many will be pure breeds. I am hoping my Welsummer rooster (check avatar) I have proves out as good as the pullets are!
