The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Ah, must be the pic on my computer. I couldn't see that.

Now I got another questions. I just saw something else in that pic. What in the world is that long orange thing your Wellie pullet is eating????

God Bless,

Pink, I am terribly sorry for your losses. I feel your pain. I started raising chicks this late summer and MY OWN puppies cleared out all but 2. I was furious, but had to forgive and take better precautions. I then lost four of my rabbits that we show, and one my very best doe to a stinking weasle. Lucky for you that you have Odin (and what a gorgeous fella he is) and you have more on the way. Best wishes to you in the new year and getting rid of that which will cause you and yours harm.

God Bless,

Tailfeathers,

That's pumpkin. The stringy mess that's inside the hollow center of a pumpkin, to be exact. They were sucking it up like spaghetti!

I have such high hopes for that hatch. They're almost 12 weeks old. Which is too young for me to be able to tell much about them yet. They've all been examined for feather stubs on the legs, and passed that little test with flying colors. No problems there. I didn't expect any. Still, it's my pet peeve, and it manifests early, so it's an easy point to check for.

What do you check for when you're evaluating your young Welsummers? Or mine, for that matter. Do you see anything in that photo that I should be watching? If you don't feel comfortable answering here, please feel free to PM me. I value your opinion, and I would never take a negative comment personally. I'd welcome it, consider it, and use my own best judgement in the end.

My thought is that I'll be looking at the 3 boys more closely over the next month or so. They need to mature a bit more before my eye will be able to see important differences in them. The girls can wait till spring, unless something obviously bad pops up. I want to see their eggs, and the shape their bodies take on as they start laying eggs. That makes such a dramatic difference in a young pullet.

Well, it has been three days of absolutely no Wellie eggs. I think maybe we are done for the year and possibly molting as sugested. It would explain the sudden color change in their eggs. I guess I will wait to see if they start up again with darker eggs. Being so far south not many of mine quit laying completely for the winter. So I wonder if they will start up soon or really wait until spring time in March? How long do Wellie's stop for winter up north? And do they all loose coloration in their eggs at the end of their laying cycle?

edited to add...
Pinkchick, I hope your remaining birds are doing well today. Hoping those dogs are being kept up by their stupid owners also.

I so wish I had taken pics of the eggs back when they were darker.

Kids sure did like them. My son's face lite up every time he came out of the coop....usually saying "look Mom another dark egg!"

Here are a few of my Wellie eggs that are in the bator. They are marked with the pink arrows and W's. The one marked with the purple arrow is my BR X Marans egg. The others are Marans and some EE's.

sorry not the best pic but you can see how close their color resembles that of the Marans.
