The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Pinkchick, They are gorgeous babies. And the information is always a help. I love reading the posts in BYC, it is the best way to learn and fun too.

Thanks! I know I sound like a broken record but I loooove my Wellies, I can't get enough of them.

I should have left little I-pip in her shell, I shouldn't have intervened but it was worth a try.

Update on the video surveillance and neighbors dogs. Cameras have been on coops for almost a week now, no activity. One neighbor said that they saw the dogs a few days ago but they weren't close to my property. Thank goodness but I'm not letting my guard down, I'd be lost if something happened to my remaining girl.

So the point of video-ing is to catch the culprit right?.....which means that somebody has to watch what has been recorded...... that someone would be me and I must tell you that after watching/scanning through many, many, many hours of BORING chicken video it should be used as some sort of disciplinary action with teenagers.

Oh yeah....part 2 of my three part staggered hatch. 12 eggs that I had been collecting before the massacre. (nope...nope *shakes head* no hard feelings here..

) 8 were set on the 12/16 for hatch today.....peeping has been going on since around 4AM this morning.
Part 3- 4 more Wellie eggs that I set at the last minute 2 days after part 2, went into lock down this morning at 6 AM to hatch Friday.

After....after the bad thing I was able to get 3 eggs from my last gal and decided that I should put those in the incubator as well. Set to hatch 1/19.
With 1 gal laying and 1 three week old pullet in the brooder and 4 baby girls that just hatched out, I'm glad I threw them all in. By June/July I should be rolling in the eggs....my eating egg customers are wondering where all those pretty eggs have gone...not to mention a few very patient peeps that are waiting for some hatching eggs.

Well, I made a big decision today. I decided that I would sell off this group of Welsummers and posted an ad locally. I talked things over with my son who really doesn't like any of them but Walle. Then he said he would rather hold my Speckled Sussex roo instead of Walle so it was OK for me to sell them. I feel kind of bad for him since they didn't work out, but then it is a relief to have a bit more room until alterations and expansion can happen with my coops. I am about to divide, but then have a big move with my caviary happening later this month into February. We are finally expanding our cavies to a bigger building.....which I have to finish out. So, I will wait on getting more Welsummers until I am settled with all my renovations and moving of critters. I hope you all have great luck with yours this year and I will be in touch when I am ready. At least I know some better breeders of Welsummers!

Congrats!
I have a Wellie hen in the laying flock that I don't use for breeding and she lays a nice speckled egg just like yours. Her eggs are among my most favorite eggs collected because of the speckles.
