The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Happy New Year! I got a new years surprise today.... my very first ever welsummer egg!

My two older girls are just 22 weeks and I thought it would be a few more weeks yet before they started to lay. So needless to say I was not expecting this. What do you experts think about this as far as color for a first egg? I have it next to a regular egg.

Absolutely beautiful!!! I know some will argue that it is not near dark enough over all but the rich and unique overlay of color is more extensive that any of the "freckling" I've seen before! So pretty!

You did not get unlucky, you got hatchery birds. I think there is a huge difference between hatchery Welsummers and breeder's Welsummers. I know of 2 people locally who got rid of their hatchery Welsummers because they were so flighty (psycho). They couldn't understand why I would be interested in this breed. It's a shame these hatchery birds are giving the breed a bad rep.

Not all hatchery birds are that way though. Our last Wellie was Hatchery and she was a lap bird and low on the pecking order. She would come when she was called and would be the curious one that followed you around while you were busy outside. When we purchased her, we had to choose from about 30 Wellies and all of them were at our feet begging for attention.

If anyone NEEDS to get some hatchery bred Welsummers or pure Calicowoods lines, Estes Hatchery is the only one that has them. They bought ALL of Harry Shaw's birds after his untimely death and they have not introduced any new blood. The wife of the hatchery owner has emailed me some time ago when I was getting into Welsummers.

Mr Shaw was a very nice gentleman and he had alot of beautiful birds. And his birds did have nice colored terra cotta eggs and I do have one of his Welsummer's originally and she laid a very beautiful speckless terra cotta egg.

4 new babies are here....one is definitely a girl and the others appear to be girls, will have to wait a little longer until they have fluffed a bit more.
