The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I had a similar thing happen to a couple of chicks. And you know what I found???? They each had a little chip of the bedding in their throat!! And I have the good kind. Don't ask me right now, can't remember but it is the kind I have read here and at the feed store is the proper stuff for chicks. I managed to save the little chicks. I am starting to think maybe I will go back to straw.. I never had any trouble with it in years gone by.

Hello-
Does anyone on here have birds from Erhard/Kummer Poultry Farm? Im looking specifically for Largefowl... If you have any could you please post on this thread or PM me privately!!!

Thanks

Nate

My brood wellie mama is a baby stealer! I had 3 broodies in a little coop, and hers were the first to hatch. A cochin girl had all quitters, so I gave her one of the babies that a different cochin hatched. Within minutes the wellie was on top of her trying to get the baby away, while her peeps were running around the coop trying to get to mom.

I moved the cochin to a different coop- poor girl just wanted a baby so bad!

How did you get the bedding out? Ours are currently on paper towel so could it have been a small piece of food stuck?

I've never heard of that! I use pine-only shavings and haven't ever had a problem. Except the food dishes getting buried.

We start out with paper towel and then go to the pine shavings and haven't had problems-not sure what was wrong with that chick guess it is just one of those things.

Broodies are out of control and it's totally acceptable behavior in my book.

I have Erhard LF birds, but only pullets. Not one rooster hatched. They are going to be crossed with my youngest roo Loki as soon as they start laying. I was truly only hoping for roosters out of his birds when I ordered eggs, guess next time I will just hope for pullets and maybe I'll get all roosters.

Another Welsummer newbie question: with Fall/Winter coming on I'm wondering about heat for my small (5) Welsummer flock. I live in Virginia and the winters can get pretty cold. I'm attempting to use the deep litter method in their coop so hopefully that will provide some heat. But in general do I need to worry about heating my coop for my Welsummer flock this winter?
