The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Hi Skip~

Wellies are pretty darn hardy birds, we don't get horrible winters here but from time to time it's been known to hang down in the lower teens for a couple of weeks here and they do super. I do not heat my coops at all, they each have 1 -13 watt CFL light bulb.

Pinkchick............just to prove that life is mostly ironic "you wanted roosters but were blessed with pullets. So many of us who do not need rooster, well THAT IS ALL WE GET .

rfunger..............I used to live in the mountains of eastern Pa and never heated my coop. Also the birds were ranging in the daytime and loved the snow. There were a few black spots on the rooster with the largest comb but I think that they disappeared when the weather changed . Some peeps like to heat their cops so the water doesn't freeze or they just have a heated water feeder base

I know Royce/Tailfeathers has some of his stock, and he is very pleased with them!

I don't have any of his LF stock but his bantams are looking good!

We used a 60 watt bulb in our coop, which holds about 7 birds, and found a heated waterer-our coop is close enough to our house that we just ran a heavy duty cord over from our outside outlet. Our girls did fine over the winter-we also closed up some of the outside run sides to help keep it warmer and they went out into the run area.

these are from the 3RD set that I hatched from my own stock and the first white 1 what causes this?

Yes, this has happened before. The eggs were from 'pure' wellie stock, but... Who did you originally get your birds from? Was it a BYC member?

Really? What do they grow up to look like? Is it like a "sport"? I really want to see them! Do they still lay dark? OMG so many questions!
