The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I have a Wellie Rooster and hen, both 15 mths old. And a Barred Rock, supposed to be a hen, 7 mths. They are molting and Henny has stopped laying. Pebbles the Rock has not started laying yet. I am finding white flakes on the poop board under their roost. And, I just noticed Kellogg's comb has white 'stuff' on it. Anybody have anything to help me out there?

Please tell me that it won't be spring until I start getting eggs again! I have been wondering why I am getting no eggs. We did kill a rat snake Sunday almost 6 ft long. Figured it had been egg hunting. But, I fluffed the nest day before yesterday and it still has not been laid in. Because of the molting, does that mean she will not lay for a while? I am so sad, if that is the story!!!

That makes me feel better! We have a light on, turned it on Sat. We are making sure they have 14 hours of light. She is not even getting in the nest! I fluffed it about 3 days ago and it is still untouched. Hopefully soon! Thanks for your help!

I crossed a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana rooster over a Welsummer hen last year in an attempt to get olive eggs. I was amazed at the various different looking birds that I got from that single mating. Particularly with the males. I had cockerels that looked like Blue Wheatens but with straight combs. I had cockerels that looked like Welsummers but with peacombs. I had cockerels that looked like Wheatens. I had cockerels that looked just like a Blue Wheaten except it had a dark blue or black beard much earlier than Ameraucanas get them. I even had cockerels that looked exactly like a Welsummer except it had a beard.

It was very interesting to see what the blue gene did to the black in the Welsummer too. I kept one female which really highlights the difference. Of course she lays a brown egg with a bit of rosey tint to it. A friend of mine has her sister that looks just like the one I kept and it lays a nice olive egg. Wouldn't you know it.

I made a lot more Easter Eggers this year from a variety of crossings. It's interesting to see how they are turning out. Next year I'll be trying other crossings too.

God Bless,

God Bless,

Do you have pictures of the black crossings to a wellie? I'd be interested in seeing what they look like. I hatched 2 blacks from my pure Ameraucana girls.

I'm sorry. I must've confused you. I was referring to the black in the Welsummers coloration. Such as in the tails, partridge back, salmon breast and such. The blue gene really diluted all that. In fact, if I could get my true BW Ameraucanas to have a blue tail like that EE, I'd be happy as a pig in mud!

God Bless,

Since you're discussing wellies crosses I thought I might interject my wellie/silkie mixes; sunshine, cupcake and muffin-top (I hope this doesn't count as hijacking the thread!). Incidently, they have clutchmates that are feathered just like silkies except they are a reddish-golden color.
