The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Thanks for all of the birthday wishes... Spending the day working around the farm, before winter really hits!!! On my birthday is usually when I put in all heated water tanks, last minute things, etc, to get ready for winter!

I guess me and the chickens will be having corn, DE, and Water for lunch today! Hehe... Actually going out to lunch with my mom today! :)

I love Welsummers! My gurls are fantastic layers. I think they are an underrated breed. There's been so many breeds introduced over the years that it's hard to stay dedicated and focused on just one or a couple. I've been working on a new breed of Welsummer the past couple yrs that I've never seen done before that I think might bring a little glory back to this Dutch breed. I will probably introduce it late spring early summer of 2011 but not let it out to the public until I feel egg color is up to Welsummer standards. I"M EXCITED!

I have a wellie girl still laying. I'm getting an egg every other day out of her. My other wellie girl decided to molt. My Marans quit laying altogether about a month ago, and they are NOT molting.

So I say the wellies beat the Marans in laying. The Marans do lay a HUGE egg though.

We purchased ours as adults already laying but a friend of ours has a 6 year old hen who still lays.. not everyday but a couple times a week!!!! Pretty impressive

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and just wanted to get some opinions on my wellies. They are supposed to be pure... but they don't quite look like the pics here. They are about 5 1/2 weeks and I see barring on their feathers, pretty sure that shouldn't be there.

Any chance they will molt out and look correct? The boys hackle is also coming in heavily striped, is this because he's a baby still or just bad (or cross) breeding? They were from a 'breeder' but unfortunately that breeder seems more interested in selling chicks than quality. (2 of my 4 SG Dorking chicks are missing their 5th toes!

I had hoped to show and breed them if they were good enough but I suspect they aren't. Please forgive the pics, they weren't cooperating and I didn't feel like chasing them.

Can take better ones when I round them up for the night.
