Yikes! I haven't gotten a single egg out of our five wellies in almost a week! This drought comes just as my son planned on collecting fertilized eggs so he can hatch on or near after January 1st. He is a 4Her and needs them to be as developed as possible in time for the county fair. He really wants to win with welsummers this year.

Has anyone else had a big drop off in production? I thought welsummers were supposed to be good year round layers. Our Javas and Australorps are laying just fine. It's only the wellies who are on strike.

Not happy. Not happy at all.

Well I would not call them year round layers...just like any other birds, they do not lay 365 days a year, yeah, that Aussie information is just one source of information, not all for the birds themselves. That alone would put the chicken on the Guiness World of Records....Not all hens are created equally in production.

Out of my Wellies, I get eggs as soon as the end of January to October or from late Feb to mid Nov, when the daylights are shorter. Its better for them as well, letting Mother Nature take care of their production, giving their bodies a rest during the winter.

EVERYONE has had a huge drop in egg production this year. This is my first year keeping chooks, and for people like me, it's been a colossal waste if I was counting on gettingg enough eggs to make the $$$ I've spent on this chicken venture worthwhile. Thank goodness they pay me in love and amusement. My girls are almost 8 months old and showing no signs of laying behavior whatsoever or other development that indicates impending laying. I figure at this point that they're holding out until spring. They hatched in March and April but have no intentions of laying any eggs this year. Wellie's not even close.

There are always threads where people wonder why their birds aren't laying, but even long-term chickeneers have mentioned that they've had good egg-laying into the fall and winter in years past but that this year has been pretty much a bust in so far as egg production goes. My girls were originally hatchery chicks (I bought them from a supposed breeder and found out the truth several months later), so I just cannot help but wonder if the hatcheries in general produced a bunch of barren pullets this year. I know quite a few people whose chickens aren't pulling their weight this year.

With any luck, what this means is that 2011 is going to be a HUGE year for egg production!!

I was expect a tapering off, to be sure, but a complete hault? I even tried shaking a finger, crossing my arms, and tapping my foot, but they just looked at me and shrugged, "Meh."

I won't put a light on them because I would rather nature handle it. I'm sad, though. Their eggs were so beautiful, especially in contrast to the other, pinkish and light brown eggs of the Aussies and Javas. *sigh*

My 2 wellie girls are a little over a year old. (10/09 hatch) I have one that is molting and she looks pathetic, so no eggs from her. My other girl, Cleopatra (knock on wood), is still laying every other day like clockwork. I'm hoping she continues, as I plan to separate my roosters tomorrow, so in 3 weeks or so, they'll be pure and I can hatch some wellie babies! (depending on the weather of course)

As far as egg droughts go, I have 16 girls and I'm lucky to get 2 eggs a day right now. (I don't add light)
