The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Froggy with chickens now! :

I only have one Wellie hen. She has always on laid an egg every other day. She is about 1 1/2 years old. She went thru the molt, stopped laying for a couple of weeks, then started back again. She even lays one every day every now and then. When the days started getting shorter, I put a light in the coop, have it set to come on in the evening and morning giving her 14 hours of daylight. Hopefully she will continue to lay thru the winter. I have a Barred Rock that is only about 3 mths old now. I hope she will start laying this spring. I only have these 2 hens and one Wellie rooster.

Nor sure exactly how your run your lights, but I would reccomend if you are going to use lights, ADD ALL OF THE EXTRA LIGHT IN THE MORNING, so they birds have a "natural" sunset, when they would go roost, if the lights just all the sudden turn off, they will end up just sleeping on the floor... Just from personal experience, I only did that for a short time, and I no longer use lights, my birds are mostly free range or in large pens.

I am actually looking for some welsummer hens. I currently have a Grand Champion - Golden Duckwing Welsummer.
Does anyone have any for sale.

here is some information I found on Golden Duckwing Welsummer:

The WelsummerUses: Dual purpose utility - meat and eggs.

Eggs: 200 - 250 large, deep red-brown. Origin: Welsum, Holland

Weight: Cock: 3.2 Kg Hen: 2.7Kg.

Bantam Cock: 1.02 Kg Max. Hen: 790g Max.

Colours: Red-Partridge, Silver Duckwing (Standardised UK), Silver, Golden (both very rare and only exist in Germany at present).

Useful to know: The Welsummer UK standard has not been revised since 1932 when the breed was still young. In reality, some details are simply not achievable. such as 'upright'. The back should in fact be long and flat, almost horizontal. Crele Welsummers are standardised as a different breed - The Welbar and are autosexing.

Here is link to the web page that shows a picture of a Golden Duckwing Welsummer

Sorry that roo looks like he got white earlobes? and pink legs, Welsummers do not have ANY white earlobes and must have yellow legs. If he only has white feathered "ear covers", then that would be acceptable. Need better pics!

TMH, are you in UK?

I know in the UK, there ARE some White Welsummers under the works but they are NOT as popular because of the predator issues they are having as well as the egg colors which are not as dark. I would not be surprised if the White Welsummers were crossed by some white plumaged bird somewhere in the background.

I was expect a tapering off, to be sure, but a complete hault? I even tried shaking a finger, crossing my arms, and tapping my foot, but they just looked at me and shrugged, "Meh."

I won't put a light on them because I would rather nature handle it. I'm sad, though. Their eggs were so beautiful, especially in contrast to the other, pinkish and light brown eggs of the Aussies and Javas. *sigh*

Heh Heh...
I propped the double bladed axe on the window sill... and had a long talk about how much I love fried chicken... no go. usually the fried chicken talk works wonders. not this year. Fortunately, my daughters birds are crazy for eggs now. Or I would be having awful icky store bought,,,,, ewwww!! I don't like to support that industry.

Robin-
How are your chicks filling out? I have some great looking pullets from this year. And wait until you see my "stud line-up for 2011" I have 8 great roosters growing out, to be candidates for the 2011 breeding season! :)

Ill have to work on getting some pics of the birds again soon.

Nate

I tried something similar last summer, but it was the BBQ with select spices parked right infront of their coop, do you think it worked? NOPE!!!!!!!! I have found that I get eggs when they feel kind enough to bless me with some. They can be down right EGG-STINGY from time to time.
