I loved my Golden Comets, they were excellent layers and very well mannered birds. They were always the first to meet me at the fence for goodies.

Thanks Robin! I'll tell ya.....I do spend more time hanging out and watching the Wellies more than any of my other birds. Wellies are indeed eyecandy. I never get tired of gazing at them. When the sun hits them just right, I can't believe my eyes, all of a sudden their colors just pop. OMGosh when the sun hits their golden hackles, I fall in love with them all over again.

Looks as if you have a sprinkling of snow. I think you must be an artist because of you sense of color. I remember the pink and green textured cloth that you used as a back drop for chick pictures. Get colored pencils and start making drawings of you wellies while you sit and watch the color highlighted by the sunlight ! That is an order !

Thanks flower! No snow, when the weather is nicer and not raining during the winter I give the chickens some hay to play with, I can't leave it in there for them for long as it gets yucky but they sure do love to play with it.
I don't think I am an artist unless you consider installing tile and mosiacs art. Well I guess it could be. I do tease my DH endlessly about doing a rooster mosaic on the floor in my new bathroom that he is finally starting for me.

I never thought of colored pencils but I do dabble from time to time with pencil and charcoals. Here is a pencilling of my Wellie roo Loki in mid crow. Remedial at best!

Colored pencils would have made all the difference I think.

Poor Martha, our wellie... I think we're gonna have to cull her. I am so sad, and my husband is even sadder because Martha is kinda HIS baby.

She is about 8 months old. She's been here a little over 6 months and was 6-8 weeks when we got her, so we are estimating approximately 8 months of age. She has been a very sickly chicken. The guy we got our assorted flock from turned out to be quite a scheister, and all the chickens we got from him except for 1 have had problems (no two were the same breed, either). This wellie, though... she's already had 3 courses of antibiotics. She had fowl pox this summer which got into her right eye and pretty much took out the eye. She is blind on the right side but has been doing pretty okay. Well, she keeps bumping that eye she can't see out of, and now it is infected AGAIN and is swollen up half the size of her head overnight. She has already had 2 courses of antibiotics for this eye, and it seems now that she's just suffering (I have another bird with problems but will post that in another thread).

We love our wellie because she is so sweet, but truth of the matter is, she has spent approximately half of her life so far on antibiotics and continues to have health problems. She is getting to the point where she's starting to suffer & that is just upsetting. We are debating whether to try one more last round of antibiotics (both internal antibiotics in the water as well as a topical eye ointment) or just take her out back and put her out of her misery. We are so torn as to what to do because in our HEADS, we know this bird is a sickly bird and needs to be culled, but in our HEARTS, she is just our sweet little Martha.

Local vets charge a couple hundred dollars to look at a chicken. I'm not taking her to a vet.... that's a lot of money for a bird that has been sick almost since the day we got her.

Thoughts, opinions, anything? If it were not for our love for the temperament and personality for this welsummer, she would have been culled after the 2nd time she got sick.
