The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I picked up a pair of welsummers at the Idaho Bird Breeders show in the fall. They've REALLY grown on me as they are good layers (reliable, every day one egg per hen, good shell quality) and gentle, curious, yet alert birds.

I have no idea as to their quality, as I didn't get them ever intending to show but to provide some eggs for the table and for a neighbor, and I hatched some replacements this spring. What color eggs do you guys typically get? One of my hens always lays a dark egg, the other lays dark eggs sometimes, and others speckled, and on other days she lays a dark egg with a lot of whitish 'bloom' on it. I like the variety.

Curious, though,.. how many lbs do yours weigh? How long did it take the boys to get to an appreciable size (ie to be worth processing)? I hatched some replacements, and we all know that even at 50/50 sex ratio, there's always too many boys.

I don't have any photos of them on photobucket yet, but I am overrun with welsummer eggs as the neighbors are out of town, so I posted some eggs on bidbird.com, and I have pictures there.

that's what we think we have, we haven't taken eye pictures yet as we have to check if we have enough different colored zip ties to mark them with.

Keep us posted -- I'm excited to think I may have called them correctly!

We ended up taking individual pictures with a number in each picture. Here are the pictures, along with what we think each one is.

I'm guessing male for 3 & 6; I'm more iffy about 5 but am leaning toward male. Wellie pros? Watcha think?

Hens~ My guess is #3, #5 and #6 are males, but do you have another photo of #3 that is a little closer up and shows more of the "V"?

When looking at the chicks #6 has a bigger and more pronounced V compared to those on #3 and #5 but the eye is what is throwing us off and so I posted it to see what others might think.

Cheryl~
I have had some boys hatch out with pretty nice "V"s making it very hard to pass judgement, but the nice V on the males is never quite as defined as the girls. Do you have a closer photo of that ones "V" too?
I sure ask for alot, don't I????
