The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I thought I spelled out what I was asking but apparently not. The tail covert is the small feathers that cover the main tail feather at the base. Most of the males I have seen on the internet have the White fluff at the base of the tail. I just thought since you have a Welsummer club someone would have some info. on breeding the Welsummer.

Carry on with your discussions as I am into breeding to the SOP. Thanks, Don

The SOP did not clarify the color of the fluff. Unlike the Marans.

I will do some investigating and see what I can come up with. As of to this date, it is NOT a fault according to the US's standard. Will check on the UK's side of things.

Not to be argumentative, but the white Tail covert fluff is a fault in the APA SOP, go to the defects section, or talk to Walt Leonard. Don

Is it under the new SOP book? If so I would need to update that information on the SOP in the WCNA section so we can modify our Welsummers

With so many of our Welsummers having that trait, we better buckle down and change roos to clean up the white tail covert fluff. I didn't know it is such a BIG deal but anything white, should not be on the Welsummers which some do crop up now and then.

Moose had that gray fluff (not white) when he was younger. He's got so many good points to him as a breeder, I would hate to have to start over. He's throwing some really nice pullets too.

If there is a way to breed it out (assuming it is not accepted in the SOP) then I'd love to know how to go about it.

The grey tail fluff is fine , I am only referring to the White. The white fluff is one of the reasons why you will not see many males win best of breed.

With the Marans I asked Walt to take it before the Standards committee , they said white feather in wing or tail DQ, and white fluff in the tail Coverts was a Fault. The committee will be meeting again this month in Washington state for the semi-annual. Why not ask Walt to get clerification on the Welsummer white from the standard Committee. We had discussions for about a month on the Marans thread about this . Don

Just one more thing and will go back to lurking. Just because something is not spelled out in the SOP does not mean it is acceptable. Lot of the breed clubs left their Sop description very vague on purpose. All of the faults are covered in the front of the SOP. Good luck with your hatching. Don
