Welcome to the wellie thread!

If you can wait a few months, I'll have more girls laying. Right now I only have 1 wellie hen laying. I'd be happy to send you some eggs.

If you want more info, or pictures, PM me.

I pack the eggs in bubble wrap and fill the box with peanuts, and people have been getting great hatches.

If you are raising a backyard flock hatchery birds are just fine. We are critical of them as breeders trying to improve the quality of our stock. Even as breeders, none of us have perfect stock.

Have you considered hatching Welsummers, or having a friend hatch some for you? Plenty of breeders have eggs available.

Hi Wellie peeps. I have 2 beautiful little Welsummer hens who are a year old and laying pretty well. However, one of my ladies just decided to start crowing this morning. She didn't lay yesterday or today. I live in town and can't have a rooster (which she is not) or even a crowing hen. lol Should I wait it out and see if she continues or I get complaints before trying to trade her for a non-crowing hen?

What say you?? :)

I don't know if Abington, Va. is close by or not. Nina raises Welsummers and is from there.

If you look at the WCNA Breeder's List, categorized by state, there are a few in VA and neighboring states that can help you with hatching eggs, chicks or started birds. I don' t know for sure if she would ship started birds but I do know Mark Montgomery would be able to ship some birds to you, since he is from NC. There are about four good breeders in VA.

Check out the link to see if they can help you! http://wcna.webs.com/breederslist.htm

Once a hen starts crowing, it is bye bye time for her. Send her to a friend's farm! I had a beautiful two year old Aussie girl that decided one day to crow. Not happy about it and sent her back to my friend who took her back and she crowded her heart out. Silly girl!

Thanks for the list. There is a name in Scottsville, VA. My youngest brother lives in Scottsville and is the builder of my chicken coops. That would probably work out because I have recently gotten said brother interested in keeping chickens again.

Abingdon is a beautiful two-hour drive south of me. If gas wasn't nearly $4 a gallon, I'd drive there more often. I always stop there going and coming when I visit my sister in Tennessee.
