Steve, have to admit, I like the contrast, it catches my eye.

Since I am new to Wellies and so far haven't got adults yet running around in the sunlight to enjoy when the light hits them, I have to depend on photos.

Also have to admit I am a bit naive and easily fooled. Still. At my age! It didn't even occur to me that the photo may have been tampered with! I thought maybe a better camera was used!

Your hen looks almost as 'meaty' as the 'Wellie Rocks'. She looks VERY NICE. I will be VERY HAPPY when those chicks arrive in September..........

Green in the tail and neck hackles? Can't help but be drawn in by the tampering photo. BUT the untampered one is a very pretty color, too.

Guess the horns are there to match her spurs.... These girls are feisty! They will fight any of my bantam roosters if challenged.. and win. None of the other layer breeds (delaware or ameraucana) will mess with them.

My father is convinced they are not welsummers but "wild chickens" and that the welsummer color is just that. Down in Jamaica, where he spends much of his time, there are chickens that run loose on the island that resemble our "welsummers" These birds are a bit more narrow but, other than that, are spot on and are the result of breeding over many many generations in an isolated area... like the wild Florida dog.

As for, "these aren't pure" ... well, neither is just about any breed you have. All have been created by crossing different birds with different genes to get a desired effect or, like ours, have been breeding in an isolated flock for enough generations to breed true. Saying yours are pure and mine aren't... well, if they represent the standard and breed true then, they are what they are.

I think putting some nice roos over these girls will correct some of their issues and give me some nice birds (they already lay nice speckly dark eggs) I don't ever plan to show them but, I like the wide breast and the color, so that's what we're shooting for

that pic is just a tad brighter and more vibrant but I can't make color where there is none. The 5 or so girls I have are all a bit different. Granted the green sheen probably isn't that loud on that girl as the contrast level brings it out more.
