The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Woke up to 2 Wellies this morning Kelly! I'm so stinkin' excited! Can't tell what the sex is yet.....silly buggers just have to be all the way in the back of the hatcher. Hope the rest of them hatch today while I am gone to work. :)

Royce~ I too love my Sportsman! I will never use any other 'bator. Now to get me a brooder like Happy Chooks has and I will be in business! :)

Congrats Kim!!!!!! I hope the rest hatch soon for you!!!

Here's the brooder from the outside. It works wonderfully for raising babies. It has it's own little run, so I start giving the chicks outside time at a week old. I got it off craigslist for $300. Both the roof and the lid of the nesting box area lift up for cleaning. There's an access door on the other side that you can use too.

Wow! That's a bargain. I would love to see some photos of the details. Inside and heat lamp stuff. If you already posted it somewhere could you send the link?

You can see the heat lamp cord in the picture above. I put a hook in the top for it and hung the lamp from the hook with chains and zip ties. I now use the Brinsea Eco Glow, you can see the inside of it in this video. I had to screw shut the vent under the nesting boxes, as we have raccoons around here. The pop door is on the right in the video, the vent that is screwed shut on the left at floor level. The bracket at the top is for a roost, but I don't use it with the babies.

The cinder block is there to keep the roof from blowing off, as we get high winds. It also has wheels, so you can move it around. I take the wheels off though for the babies, as the gap is big enough for escapees.

I was trying to cram as many eggs as I could into the incubator, so I thought I'd stop and take a picture lol. I put a W on the Welsummer eggs, b on the Barnevelder eggs, BW on the BW ameraucana, L on the lavender ameraucana and a t on the turkey eggs. I found a robin's egg and stuck it on top for comparision. it has an R on it. This is a hatch I'm doing for myself so I put the darkest eggs I have in to hatch. The second picture is without flash.

Very nice looking eggs Fay. Set some of those Wellie and a couple BW eggs myself yesterday. Super eggs!! Mine may have came from the same place yours did! Actually I'm pretty sure they did!

Do you guys go for the darkest eggs or spotted eggs with darkness? I really like the spots but the dark is is nice too. I'm very new to welsummers. 4 weeks old actually.

I think we all have our own preference. some like the look of spots, some like a terra cotta base with a darker fine over spray look, I personally like the dark terra cotta as a solid color. The egg in the upper left corner of the picture is my favorite!

Outpostwest, keep me posted on your hatches! These are my 2011 vB Barnie's eggs.... I guess I would say they are from your birds now
