Hi - both of the Wellis hatched on Feb 28th - they are almost 9 weeks old.

Here's a pic of one of them from Tuesday at 8 weeks old.

When did this chick hatch? I can't remember. I'll try and get a few pictures of some of mine that are the same age. There isn't Leghorn in there from my flock as I don't own any Leghorns nor does the breeder I got mine from. I may need to e-mail the pictures to somebody to post since I do most of my BYC on my phone and I can't post pictures from my phone anymore.


These are 2 of my Welsummer's. If you remember I asked about this boy having wry tail. He wasn't in the breeding pen when I collected Bobbi's eggs. I have one with a nicer tail in there.

Both of my Wellis look like your young cockerel. Mine are now almost 9 weeks old.

These are not the greatest pictures, but they are my breeding pen, a young pullet, and a young cockerel.

I have a feed question. I have the ability to order a custom feed that will end up costing me less than buying the Purina feed, it will be about $10 per back. My question is, if you could have what ever you wanted in your feed, what would you put in it and what ratios of each thing? Does anyone else do a custom feed?

You may want to mention what age and type your flock is... starter/pullet, layer, meat birds, they all require different concentrations of ingredients.

Good point, thanks. I'm speaking of my adult Welsummer flock, since these are technically dual purpose birds, I want a little higher protein concentration than normal layer at 16%. I am in the suburbs so I don't get to free range my birds the way I would like to . I give them grass clippings and snacks, but I want to make sure I'm giving them the best nutrition I can to help in good embryo formation, egg laying and length of life

Hopefully someone can help; sorry, I just use the pre-made crumble stuff still and will likely use the pellet stuff when they get older. I wouldn't know the first thing about special mixes.

Polyface farms mixes their own feed and they might have a list of what they use too. This is also an excellent book. Not for me, I am very happy with Purina and my flock has done well with it....better than the custom made feed made at the mill near here...they just can't balance out the feed intake and feed outtakes. AND it smelled BAD!
