While the quality of the photo makes it a little difficult, I think that the bird in this picture is a pullet.

Roos chests can be of 20 percent brown feathered on their chests....however some would get almost sold brown with some black flecks of feathers popping up....its a trait you don't want in Welsummer roosters. I know Whitmore Farm had one roo shown on his website, of that example which we do not encourage it. If you do get one like that, it will have to be culled out.
Some roosters would get that color pattern, late developer, pinker combs, larger wattles and combs, you bet it would be a roo OR it could be a Leghorn variety.
I also see some darker pattern on its wings.
If this person who owns that chick, can tell us now in a few months what exactly she has, a roo or pullet. I'm sure its a roo but I've been wrong before!
Hello Everyone,
I'm not sure if this is the right way to post a question? but as I've read thru the post today and gained alot of
of insight on the Welsummer's, and here is my question: This past March I purchased my first chicks from Estes Hatchery in Missouri.
Now I have waited for three years to finally get my first chickens( Reading and Studying the Welsummer's) for those were the breed I've really wanted. Did I make a bad choice buying my Welsummer chicks from them? 1-Roo and 1-Pullet . I'm in this for the long haul, and to hopefully begin to breed my own Welsummer's. I've not found alot of Breeders willing to part with thier own lines, which I very much understand. So any information on where I could possibily buy an established line would be most helpful as I would love the chance to help preserve and improve the breed. (very big fan of the Dutch/Wales lines). BYC is a wonderful Website!!!! Thanks Everyone for so much info on here.
L3Home - first is a cockerel, 2nd is a pullet.
ChickenJoyMom - welcome! I'm not familiar with Estes hatchery stock, but several here are.
