The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Roos chests can be of 20 percent brown feathered on their chests....however some would get almost sold brown with some black flecks of feathers popping up....its a trait you don't want in Welsummer roosters. I know Whitmore Farm had one roo shown on his website, of that example which we do not encourage it. If you do get one like that, it will have to be culled out.

Some roosters would get that color pattern, late developer, pinker combs, larger wattles and combs, you bet it would be a roo OR it could be a Leghorn variety.

I also see some darker pattern on its wings.

If this person who owns that chick, can tell us now in a few months what exactly she has, a roo or pullet. I'm sure its a roo but I've been wrong before!

Hey everybody,
Bobbi's eggs came from me. Bobbi,
When did this chick hatch? I can't remember. I'll try and get a few pictures of some of mine that are the same age. There isn't Leghorn in there from my flock as I don't own any Leghorns nor does the breeder I got mine from. I may need to e-mail the pictures to somebody to post since I do most of my BYC on my phone and I can't post pictures from my phone anymore.

These are 2 of my Welsummer's. If you remember I asked about this boy having wry tail. He wasn't in the breeding pen when I collected Bobbi's eggs. I have one with a nicer tail in there.

I've got pictures now, but the chest coloration might be hard to show... I kept them in the brooder and with the heat we got earlier this month, they didn't fully feather in as soon as they should have. They're outdoors now so they're getting them in faster now, but she/he doesn't have as many chest feathers as they normally would at this age, I think. At least, as far as I can tell from what I've read.

Here's the pics of both the Roo-in-question, and their same-age sister (that one I'm pretty darned sure is a pullet, and is why I started getting worried):

Hello Everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the right way to post a question? but as I've read thru the post today and gained alot of
of insight on the Welsummer's, and here is my question: This past March I purchased my first chicks from Estes Hatchery in Missouri.
Now I have waited for three years to finally get my first chickens( Reading and Studying the Welsummer's) for those were the breed I've really wanted. Did I make a bad choice buying my Welsummer chicks from them? 1-Roo and 1-Pullet . I'm in this for the long haul, and to hopefully begin to breed my own Welsummer's. I've not found alot of Breeders willing to part with thier own lines, which I very much understand. So any information on where I could possibily buy an established line would be most helpful as I would love the chance to help preserve and improve the breed. (very big fan of the Dutch/Wales lines). BYC is a wonderful Website!!!! Thanks Everyone for so much info on here.

I bought my birds from Estes hatchery the first year after they purchased the breeding stock from Calico Woods. I have been very happy with the birds I got from them. I can't speak to the quality of their current offering but I would expect them to be of a better quality than offered by most hatcheries.

While I no longer have any of the original birds I have thru selective culling maintained a high standard in my flock. I make at least one trip per year to southwest Missouri and if you are still needing birds perhaps we can work something out.

L3Home - first is a cockerel, 2nd is a pullet.

ChickenJoyMom - welcome! I'm not familiar with Estes hatchery stock, but several here are.

Thanks, Happy Chooks. Sadly, that's what I figured. It means he's destined for my cousin's 'farm' as I cannot have a rooster in city limits.

Yes, I'll confirm it's sex in a couple of weeks - when it starts crowing. I have two that look exactly like that - if they are in fact pullets I will be the happiest pullet owner in the world. I'll keep you updated. They came from hatching eggs from MrHeinz77.
