The Welsummer Thread!!!!

yep. we have a ways to go HAHA. just 20 more weeks! LOL!!! :) :) I wonder if they'll lay before it gets too cold. hmmm....

Tailfeathers - you are up on chicken genetics, if someone wanted to start a duckwing project, what breed would be a good one to cross with? (anyone with advice chime in)

Ewesheep suggested getting some of the bantam variety and breeding them up in size, but I wanted to see what options might be out there

Not saying I'm going to do this, I'm just "thinking out loud"

Thanks for the compliment but I'm not all that up on genetics as you might think. I know some but overall I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to that. Hopefully someone else can help you.

God Bless,

pinkchick- is that chick really pink? Here in Iowa, it's illegal to buy or sell dyed animals. Did it stay pink? How the heck is it pink anyways? I've read somewhere that the embryo is dyed while in the egg.
This is a photo that I found online somewhere, I believe the photo was taken in Bangledesh. The chick was dyed just before it hatched and yes the color fades away as they grow out. The color on this chick is already growing out, hence the white wing feathers. As the chick feathers out the color will disappear. :)

Welsummers are a duckwing. Red Partridge Duckwing.
When you ask about a duckwing project, what is the goal of the project? Are you trying to get to Silver Duckwing?

A person might be able to use a single combed Silver Penciled Wyandotte or perhaps a Silver Penciled Rock. Both having yellow legs and single combs (be sure to use the single combed variety of Dotties..the rosecomb will be very hard to breed out) should put you a litlte closer to the result that you are looking for. Egg color will possible lack, but you can also breed back and regain it.

It will be a long road to breed back to pure Wellie and eliminate the red....6 generations I believe. I have a few questions out to some of my breeder friends over at the classroom at the Coop and will let you know what they have to say when I hear back from them.

I really like the look of the silver duckwings. I think egg color for them is a problem in both the bantam size and the LF size in Europe.I think any time you use another breed as a cross, it does take a lot of time to get back to what you want. That's why I was wondering if starting with the bantams would be a better bet.

I told Happy, I may just get the bantams and enjoy the coloring on them. I don't think I have the time or patience to take on a project that big
