So Scoot, how are you faring? We are not doing too bad....more sleet than ice fell last night which helps, but it's still really slick out there.

It just keeps coming down!

First we got around 2 feet of snow. Finally got dug out yesterday afternoon. Still don't know if I can get my car to the county road. Now its -27 degrees, was -36 at 5 A.M. Will this cold never end??

Well we got the crappy weather this morning. Kept the school kid home, I know my van wont make it on the roads, and I dont trust the busdriver. Ive seen her drive. Not with my babygirl she aint!

Yuck! I hope that you all keep power okay. With this incubator running and the chicks in the brooder, I've been seriously panicking about getting weather like that here. We usually do several times each winter, but I really hope we miss out on it this year.

Stay warm!

I'm in Tulsa, and our 1/4 inch prediction on Monday was obviously just meant for the first part of the day for yesterday! We've already got over 1/2-5/8 of an inch right now. There hasn't been any snow. It's all sleet and freezing rain.

The only good thing is, the ice storm that hit a little over a year ago (Dec.'07) broke most of the big trees, so hopefully the damage will be minimal. We're more worried about the power going out. Last time I think there were between 500,000 and 700,000 people in the state without power.

We don't have our generator here now, and DH is trapped in Houston and can't get home. If the power goes out and it gets too bad here, we will have to head towards my FIL's house on the other side of town. Unfortunately, the house we are living in is all electric, so we are screwed. They don't expect the power outages they had before, but they also didn't expect the storm to be this bad. They are now saying at least 2 inches of ice. Not ice and snow, just ice. That is a lot of ice, and unless you've been in an ice storm, it's hard to imagine.

Last year we had roofs collapse from the weight of it, huge trees explode then fall on houses, cars, buildings. Water lines froze and burst. The entire state was declared a state of emergency by the President. Fires from people trying to stay warm in their houses. Not to mention all the deaths from wrecks, collapsing houses/trees, exposure, carbon monoxide poisoning, fires, etc.

I am in the heart of Tulsa, right by the mall, and it took over a week for us to get electricity back on. Others weren't so lucky.

Our electric company was so overwhelmed that they had electric workers from 20 different states come and help get everything back on line. Thank goodness for those electric workers!

Then the clean up was horrendous. It was well into the summer before most of the piles of debris was picked up. Unfortunately, that made the rat population explode. We've lived here 10 years and never had rats, but we did this fall. Luckily I have a great hunting cat and a Boston Terrier. There are still areas in the North of Tulsa that haven't had their debris picked up.

I had a bad feeling yesterday and went and got my kids from school before it was even doing anything. The ladies in the office kind of laughed about it. By the time I got home, it had started, and at 4:45 pm I got a pre-recorded message from the school saying that the middle school bus would be another hour (DD gets off at 3:20) and the elementary would be several hours late because of the ice. I wish that other people had paid attention to the weather and gotten their kids early. During the 5 o'clock hour, there were over 30 wrecks. That is not separating the pileups into individual wrecks, just separate incidents.

I hope everyone that is in the grips of this ice storm stay warm and safe.

This is bad, and it is only going to get worse. Those of you that are able to need to check in and let us know you are ok.

Good luck,

Shelly

I know what you mean about that ice storm. It was terrible. It was worse than the one in '00. I couldn't believe how bad it kept getting. I hope that it doesn't get that bad for you guys up there. The meteorologists are saying that the eastern part of OK still has a lot more ice to go.
