the Will They Hatch? thread

How long had she been sitting her clutch ? I read somewhere that it works best if they have been sitting long enough that the transferred eggs/chicks are close to the natural hatch date of her original clutch . I'm afraid she might have seen the new chick as a threat to her own babies , and ate it .

She has been setting on her little clutch over the past two weeks... and when I first put the 2 pipped eggs and the newly hatched chick with it's shell under her she seemed like" Oh, peeping already? Okay... whatever" I was completely shocked to find the little one completely gone. If I bring any others out later they will be put under one of my EEs that has a much higher level of mothering instinct!

Hey, I was in the same boat 19 days ago. Except that I had 6 shipped and half made it unscathed. One that had been cracked the entire way around, yet was not busted, I was able to save. After researching what to do, I ran out and got some elmer's glue. After painting 3 coats on the cracks and 19 days later, I am in lock down and that same egg should be hatching. I would post pics like you did of the shipment, but am new to this and need to figure out how to do that. Let us know how it goes. I sure have my fingers crossed.

My local Farmer's Union had free Farmer's Almanac Calendars, so I grabbed 2

Little recipe or anectdote

Moons in February

I will let you know how good a difference it makes... once I know

My garden didn't do so well this past year, but I think that was due to infrequent watering & overcrowded garden beds.

I am very curious about the farmers almanac - I can't for the life of me figure out how it works (meaning that could those days be good for me in my area AND good for you in yours if you are on the other side of the states???) Maybe I will try and find an old copy and see what it looks like. I remember my grandfather (a truly amazing gardener) swore by it. (He also planted by the moon). Hmmm, very interesting this.

Thanks Livinwright Farm, somehow I missed your reply before. I will be very interested to see how it goes.

Rathbone, they do have a part on their website where you can put in where you are and it will give you details for where you live. Unfortunately for me it's only for the USA and Canada.

I get a moon planting guide from a local mag here and it gives adjustments for local timezones so I expect I can just do a larger time zone adjustment if I wanted too.

Have to ask... are you allergic to fur or do you just like furless critters? (I ask as someone who'd developed allergies to her kitties and dogs

Well I'm about to head up the street and if my roadside stall doesn't have eggs I'm going to be so disappointed!

They had some yesterday on my way out to do shopping but I didn't want to leave them sitting in a hot car. They were sold out on my way home.

My Brahma egg should be hatching today. I haven't seen it rock or heard it peep and there is no pip.

Please hatch little baby.

I checked my viable eggs to see if all the air cells were weird, and...they were. All 7 of them! And yet there are squiggly jigglies in there.

But it definately looks like the air cell was "loose" and settled in two places: where it should be at the big end of the egg, and slightly down the side of that end.

Every one of the ones that developed. Huh???

Also, it looks like maybe the air cell is too big in a few? How big should it be for day 11?
