the Will They Hatch? thread

I've never searched for info on detached air cells , but remember reading some set them big end up [ as usual ] and do not turn them for the entire time . I just put mine in the auto turn and waiting to see Will They Hatch? .

I can tell you my shipped ones with detached air cells did NOT do well on their sides in my 'bator with the semi auto turner. One is in lockdown but I had a bunch of blood rings so I think I would have got more if they were standing up.

Now I have a Hover-Bator with an auto turner I will be setting any future shipped eggs in there. I feel if I'd had it when I received these eggs I would have had much better results.

Okay, not sure if it is my BG hen or one of the Black Australorps.... but this hen has been hoarding eggs for the past week! I removed two of the eggs from under her, and put two that have pipped and are peeping under her. after a minute or two, they started peeping under her, she cocked her head to the side, heard them & talked back, and hunkered down on them!!!

I may go out and make another switch or two or three or four!!!!!

Hiya! Farmers' Almanac You say? I only recently found out it existed and am quite intrigued. Do you have the full version or just use the free 2 months? Do you find it makes a noticeable difference? I plant by the moon and I think that does make a difference. Certainly get's me more organized which is a good thing!

I will be watching with interest how those very long stored eggs do. I think that is a great experiment.

My local Farmer's Union had free Farmer's Almanac Calendars, so I grabbed 2

on the side it has:
Best Days In February(for example)
For Planting
Aboveground crops 5, 14, 15
Belowground crops 22,23

For Setting Eggs
11, 12, 20-22

For Fishing
2-18

Little recipe or anectdote

Moons in February

I will let you know how good a difference it makes... once I know

My garden didn't do so well this past year, but I think that was due to infrequent watering & overcrowded garden beds.

I am very curious about the farmers almanac - I can't for the life of me figure out how it works (meaning that could those days be good for me in my area AND good for you in yours if you are on the other side of the states???) Maybe I will try and find an old copy and see what it looks like. I remember my grandfather (a truly amazing gardener) swore by it. (He also planted by the moon). Hmmm, very interesting this.

I have several that look like this - I tried to keep the humidity high thinking that would take up the space.

Thanks for the link, next time I'll try putting them in an egg carton. I let them rest for 24 hours and then candled and knew they were iffy - let them rest some more and then put them on their sides in the incubator. I think maybe two will hatch (if I'm lucky).

These only went from Texas to San Diego - they were marked fragile - live embryos (I always think that's a little dramatic). I've had eggs shipped from New York that arrived in good shape. The box on these looks great but somewhere along the like they were treated rough. Most were fertile and I would probably order from this seller again, I just think it's a gamble.

One by one they quit. They went into lock down last night so we'll know by Thursday.

Well after bragging on my homeamde bator, I have run into some problems. I have had 4 very successful hatches and one disaster and heading into another. For some reason, my light bulb is malfunctioning. it doesn't come on when it is supposed to and when Ihave found it off and the temp down to 70 usually overnight or after coming home from work and no knkowing how long it has been this way, touching it and it comes on!! My DH had me check the connection in the fixture and it was pushed down. Then we had a burned out bulb and then a new fixture and bulb and still I had the bulb not come on and did when touched. I am at my wits end. I had 11 BLRW egg in to go t lock dwon on Thursday and when candled only 3 stillhave development. I have a dozen BCM's that have been in for a week and a half, not candled yet if them can be and just set 6 Frizzle cochin and 6 BBS Cochin eggs last week. Just don't know what if any will hatch. I have joined the Valentines day setting and the Mahoni's Easter hatch, and hope to have things worked out by then. I will be purchasing different brand of bulbs and thinking of putting in two bulbs just in case ine doesn't come on.
