the Will They Hatch? thread

Quote:
I just finished another hatch last week and 3 of them had huge air cells, they never hatched. They died in the shell. I can't get myself to do an egg autopsy so I'm just guessing.

I've heard several people say they "let their eggs rest" after getting them delivered, bringing them home, etc. before they put them in the incubator. Can someone tell me why this is done?

Based on the link I posted you should reduce humidity to let the egg dehydrate a bit.

I'm more interested in your description of "they had a rough ride" ... was the box marked ~ Fragile hatching eggs or words to that effect? My experience with the USPS in shipping b. Splenden (bettas) has been excellent. A couple of weeks ago I had a shipment of five fish coming in, when the PO called to say I had a package to pickup I told them the package was tropical fish ...

when I got to the PO the box was in the managers warm office. The clerk brought it out like there was a new born baby in the box. I think better labeling will help avoid situations like Steve experienced.

Sorting machines , other boxes in the shipment , and airplane loading/unloading conveyors can't read ; and I believe some disgruntled workers that can must use those marked FRAGILE as soccor balls

Nothing much to do about the power going out ; my generator has not been fixed yet and my power converter is in town over in the next county, in my van that shot craps last week . I threw a blanket over the bator and took a friend to a meeting in that same town , but naturally I forgot to pick up the converter while there

. Both this outage and the last was caused by the same unspecified
" problem in town " that only affects a grid of 256 people out here in the country , 10 miles away . I'm starting to think they fix " the problem " with bubble gum and duct tape ; and don't use as good a brand of duct tape as mine

Power was on when I got home , probably off about 3 hrs , and bator is nearly recovered . It recorded a low of 88 .
which wasn't too bad considering the room temperature low recorded at 48

Not bad at all! Note that my broody was on her nest in the coop when it was well below 20 degrees and would get off the nest and sometimes return to the wrong nest while I was at work. Her eggs were stone cold some days and 3/4 managed to hatch and thrive.

I need to learn the duct tape fixing skills. My skills are currently very limited - to zip ties.

Me too. I had some eggs shipped put them in last sunday. The bax was not smashed near as badly as the OP's but it was smashed up. I had several detatched air cells and one that was cracked all the way round. I candled on day 7. Of the 11 only 5 are still going. The detached cells, none are going and the cracked egg started developing and then quit a couple days in. I am hoping the 5 will keep going....we shall see.
