the Will They Hatch? thread

yippiechickie.gif
for pips, zipps & hatchers.

Have faith with them yemp spikes....103-105 is survivable for sure. I've heard of spikes of 108 with great hatches.

OKay ya'll I have been reading through this thread since lockdown, which was Friday at 6pm. Day 18. Today is my DAY 21 of my 1st hatch. Of 18 shipped Lav Ameraucana Bantams 8 went into lockdown and 8 of 8 Black and Blue mOttled D'uccles start their lockdown today although they actually have been locked down since Friday..oops..in my excitement I didn't realize that I was going to have a problem setting eggs 3 days apart.Ordered a Genesis but won't be here until later this week...I am using a 1602 with aftermarket fan installed...on the 10th day of incubating. Yeah, I took them out had DH install the fan, put them back in. I kept them warm under the brooder heat lamp. But pretty sure I lost 4 during that procedure.

So, I have made some mistakes for sure. I candled the night before lockdown and all 8 were viable and I could see small movements here and there. But I have no pips, no zips, no nothing. Day 21 will actually ht at 6pm, b/c I set Jan. 31st at 6pm. Is that right?? I am so worried and am kicking myself for all my mistakes. Anyone have experience to share with me where they didn't get any action until day 21? Or what happened after less than perfect 18 days? I am so nervous.

OK, I have an update and questions....first, I set the bator up 8am Super Bowl Sunday (two weeks ago), so was yesterday (Sunday) day 14 or 15? I thought someone said you don't count day one until 24 hours has passed???? Second, they go into lock down on day 18? That's why I need to know how exactly to count because lock-down will be at the end of the week.
So I candled last night with my computer opened to the day by day egg candling examples and compared my 22 eggs.
I got:
17 with great possibilities, two of those I believe I saw moving
3-5 are questionable because they're Americaunas and the shell is hard to see through
1 never developed at all and one looks like it's a day 6, so is that one a quitter or could it still be alive?

So IF my results are close to being right (only my second time candling so I'm not that good at it) I'll be getting a lot more chicks then I thought. Remember, these were from my girls I lost to "something", a couple of weeks ago. So 3 were from the morning I found them and went into the fridge for about 2 hours (before I got out of shock and had the great idea to hatch whatever of the eggs from my girls that I could), had 4 from the day before, in the fridge for overnight and then 15 that varied from 3 days to 1 1/2 weeks (at the most) in the fridge.

Any recommendations or suggestions at this point? Thanks!

well i braced the leg today of the game/bantam hen?, and then seen a pic showing exact same thing, so must be decent start. at least it wont be walking on top of foot now, and it wont just be culled or eaten out loose (though non seem to care to fix anything older than chick injuries and just say to kill a hen or rooster with issues). eggebert the rosecomb bantam maybe alive, as its egg showing bigger mass on bottom before the egg is turned, but the temps spiked last night and today, so wondering, and sill not sure if alive as mas looks like younger stage at best, still no air sac or veins seen, but shell really thick and porous, so if it survives and even to juvi ill be amazed... anyone have one of these make it doing aparently all the wrong things like me? also now have a few barans eggs i think in bator some kids gave me from theirs that dont sit on them.

Just sit on your hands and don't worry yet. Sometimes the little guys just take a bit longer, they don't know they're supposed to pop out right on Day 21

If you had 100% fertility at day 18 you're doing GREAT! Just leave them be and I bet they'll pop out when they're good and ready. If temps were low at any time it will slow development down so it might just take a bit longer. Leave e unhatched ones in until day 25 at least in case you have some stragglers.

If you set on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb 6th) then day one would officially be 24 hours after you set them (sometime on Feb 7th). That means you are on day 15 now and you will go into lockdown on Thursday Feb 24th. So let's say you set them at 6:00PM on Feb 6th, you woudl go into lockdown at 6:00PM on Feb 24th.

Hope that makes sense

Jettgirl24-thank you for replying. It helps ease my mind and remember common sense when so filled up with excitement/anxiety hoping for the best and expecting the worst! also, off topic totally- how do i get those cute smileys in my messages?

I've had spikes to a little over 104 both early and late and had good hatches........................... I think its evidently not bad as long as it doesn't last too long.

I've noticed my still air is affected by unsteady room temperatures; a change of only 3 degrees will create problems. The other thing I've noticed is that as the chicks develope and start creating heat of their own, I have to adjust the wafer towards decrease.

I plan to candle Wed night, and lockdown at 8 PM if any look good. [I'm glad you asked, I kinda forgot it was coming up.]

The cold gave me the excuse I needed to go look for a new doctor. My former doctor [and a bunch of others] have left after the clinic I used changed ownership and administrations. I had to go across the state line to find a clinic not under that same ownership, and they only have one doctor that's taking new patients

................. I can't see him untill Wed. .

.................................. I went to Wallyworld and bought Mucinex, Nyquil, and Halls.

I know a little bit about being in pain.......................... so working out to an excercise video is a mistake I'll not be making.

I have never had a pourous egg hatch, can't candle worth a hoot so wait for day 18, but have been blessed with two pretty successful hatches even though many things went wrong both times.
