I think my biggest pet peeve with S2 was (trying hard not to spoil anything here).... the 'creatures' at the end. They seemed like something real out of history, instead of unique original creatures.
Yes and no. If we're talking the Kaer Morhen scenes, They're based on mythical creatures from eastern European folklore and have been adapted into many stories and movies, especially in fantasy. In the games they fly, but they're described in various ways that the TV show covers pretty well. A definite stylistic adaptation for sure, but reasonably correct.

If we're talking the peple on the other plane at the very end, that's also a super common myth from Central Europe and is one of my favorites. Also adapted into the bible.

Well, you're not at all off base with your reference and what you think they look like. Now imagine you're an 8th century mason quarrying stone in central or eastern europe and you find bones in the rock. Today with advances in science, we'd know what it was. Back then, they just made stuff up :)
