Hi everyone,

I love talking about about Breeds of chickens so I wanted to discuss one. I have six Light Sussex eggs in my incubator and I would love to hear a little more information about them, things like...

Egg Colour?
Egg Size?
How Many Eggs?
Good For Showing?

If anyone could reply it would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks, Ian.

Sussex are a wonderful breed. They are very cold hardy, friendly and gentle (my children made lap pets of ours), and good layers of large, brown eggs. In addition, if you cross a Light Sussex hen with a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire rooster, the offspring will be Red Sex Links which are egg laying machines (6-7 eggs per hen per week) and can be sexed by color from hatching (male chicks are whitish, female chicks are reddish). The answers to your questions are as follows:
Egg color: Brown
Egg Size: Large
Number of Eggs: 3-4 eggs per hen per week on average, occasionally a really prolific hen will lay 5 eggs in a week.
Good for showing: Yes, as long as they meet the APA standard of perfection for Sussex.
