Conquistadores did not wipe them out. The Maya Indians are still alive and well in southern Mexico. Quiche, one of the Maya languages, is recognized by the Mexican government. The Aztecs didn't get obliterated either. They are still alive and in Mexico. Very few of these Indian tribes were wiped out completely in the conquest. Most often, a large portion of them died of small pox and following generations intermarried with the Spanish.
From what I have heard, the current Maya populace in Mexico isn't terribly worried about the world's end.
