Do you have problems or complaints from your neighbors before?

Oh boy, that is really scary. This person who you think did it a teenager? Any idea why they did it? I suppose they've complained about the barking and clucking?

An adult male....yes, he has complained about the dogs - I called the sheriffs dept after he left a nasty voice mail on my answering machine. There were complaints about the rooster crowing, but I rehomed the rooster - the hens are usually quiet.

I'm pretty diligent about making sure my dogs are not a bother to anyone.

Funny thing is the people on the other side of me have dogs that really bark a lot and on the other side of them, the people have gotten chickens including a crowing rooster. I'm wondering if they think it is my dogs doing the barking and my rooster doing the crowing?

have you called the cops?? Filed a report. from what you are saying...only a person could have gotten in to the gate, but did he also kill the chickens and take the heads is the question??? I am very curious now...

Since you know of a bad neighbor, be especially watchful. He won't stop at just opening your gates. I know it's a bother, but I would check the yard for any unknown substance before I let the dogs out. I wouldn't put it past this idiot to throw out poison for the dogs. And again, unfortunately, I speak from experience. Luckily I got the dog to the vet, but it was a very expensive venture all because someone didn't like my dog. It's hateful that someone in your own neighborhood is doing this to you. Unfortunately unless you have proof that he did something, the cops won't do anything about it. Definitely invest in an infra-red camera. It sounds like it will be well worth the money you spend and if he comes back (which he probably will) you'll have proof to prosecute.

What do people expect living out in the country? I know someone who had problems with a neighbor about dogs, big problems, and I don't even think it was her dogs but someone elses. Some people just obsess on one person's home. So was this a threatening voice message? Maybe the cops can brush for prints. Yes, I would be very concerned about the doggies (I love weeny dogs, I have one too).

I agree. I don't know what people think they are going to get when the move to the country. I have goats and chickens (with roosters). I had them long before the new neighbor moved in. Guess what - as soon as he introduced himself he started asking about how much noise my roosters make. Well, to me it's no noise at all. I love to hear them crowing at all times of the day. To be a nice neighbor however I do keep them in the coops until about 8 on the weekends. The dogs however are a different story. He's actually yelled at my dogs to shut up when they were out barking. I don't leave them out long, just to take care of business but they do bark at anything the moves on the road. Luckily I've had no problems but I am always ever watchful.

I feel like asking people what they expected when they moved out of the city? If he doesn't stop bugging me I'll put in a pig stye upwind from his house.

I hope that your dogs aren't labs I had a post on here about that but the mod's locked my post still not sure why dont really care. anyhow long story short I dispatched a whole farm fulla critters just to find out it was not even them doing the killing it was my Black lab Who never hurt even a fly But she ran in my coop took one bird at a time and bit the heads off she was even so nice as to leave the heads in the yard and somewhat pile the bodys outside the yard for me. Point being everyone is a suspect til you find the culprit I lost 16 rare chickens and some not so rares over my lab. Do not let anyone tell you dogs wont behead chickens and leave them laying because they will.

Edited to say Buy a camera as other posters have stated and a flock of crowing roo's From craigslist this should get his attention if its human hands.

Get a night vision video camera. Post video on Youtube, facebook, byc, CBS news, etc. then prosecute.

NO ONE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO BE CRUEL TO ANIMALS AND GET AWAY WITH IT.

I am so so sorry for your loss. I know you must be devastated. I've had dogs attack my chickens before, there are tons of feathers. It's very painful to think about, I know. I cried for days and we too tried our very best to make sure our pens were predator proof. Have mercy on the neighbor if I knew it was them. I would definitely get more chickens and put up that camera. I would even consider a long range like "baby monitor". The chickens all alert you when something is wrong. I've warded off many attacks by them letting me know that something isn't right, but it's difficult to hear this time of year if you are asleep with the air-conditioning on in the house.
Blessed be. I certainly hope you find out what happened.
