The Wyandotte Thread

gunna need to see a better pic ..the one in front looks almost like a wellsummer hen ..the brown one in the middle i cant tell ..but the comb looks like it mite be a single comb and not a rose comb ..the front one looks like a single comb as well ..the middle one looks like a production bird..maybe a red ..or comet..it may be a rose comb now that i blew up the pic..lets ee what everyone else thinks ..
My front baby is Arri the Arucana (not sure about the spelling) my babies are new so I'm trying to get a better pic. Lol

Just acquired these guys and gals today (hence the cardboard box…and hey,at $2/ea who could resist?!) and I believe they are 6-8 weeks old, all seem quite healthy.

I'm new to Wyandotte's and was wondering if you could explain the colors to me? I've read through page after page of Wyandotte threads on here, and my head is spinning.

Sorry you can't see this guy's head, but I'm 100% positive he's a he. But I don't know what you call his coloring? He's the only one this color in my bunch. Is it a splash?

Pretty sure this one is a rooster, too.

(I'm guessing roo on the left, and hopefully pullet on the right? From what I've been reading (can you tell I've been reading? Ha!) the roos have less lacing on the wing feathers than the pullets?)

I have three like this one my son is holding, and one is definitely a rooster (I think the 2nd pic I posted is him, and his comb is bright red compared to the other two, including the one here) Hopefully a nice little trio?!

This is a blue one. Now, the rose combs are flatter, right? The brighter the red on a rose comb the more indicative that it's a rooster?

This one looks roo to me, also. Doesn't seem very laced.

Here's the lot of them, all 10. I just love their coloring. I feel pretty confident about at least 3 pullets, and if I can get pictures of the single comb babies, I'll try to post their pictures. I also read about late feathering in in the males, and several of the single comb blue's still have some downy under fluff. I really don't have much history on these chicks, totally taking a guess at their age and everything. I'm hoping for more than 3 girls, but when you only pay $20 for the bunch of them, you take your chances! Would all of these be considered red laced wyandottes?

So, any input? The roo's will likely end up in the freezer (if I can stand to do it) but I may keep one or two to cross for a meat bird. Anyone have experience with that, or do these make good meat birds on their own?
Thanks for putting up with my newbie questions!

heres a few pics of my wyandottes..not much wing color but there is some ..these girls are 5 months old..

i no taking care of their combs and waddles this winter will be alot nicer then the big single combs on my wellies and production birds..greasing them up every night can get to be a hassle but when our temps drop to 10 below and stays that way for a week its needed..

noticing diffrent shapes of combs on them ..some more pronounced then others ..some look kind of odd i thought but i guess are normal for a rose type comb..these girls are not laying yet ..i hope they start soon ..they eat alot ..50lbs every 2 weeks ..they sure are pretty tho...

this is cutiepie ..shes the smallest of my wyandottes but the most friendlyest ..she is always the first to come to me ..and she loves to be picked up and have her feathers petted ...

Marylyn SLW and Ratchet GLW. I have two GC as well and the two pictured do not like us to touch them. My Goldens are very lovable wish these girls were. Still love them! Silly hens! The eggs they they are a very light brown and only lay every other day. Normal for this breed?

i read that wyandottes lay about 180 to 260 eggs a yr ..so yeah i would say that sounds about right ..

pretty birds you have ..the ones who dont like to be touch , i would guess were not handled enough as chicks to get used to you touching them ..i have 22 birds and theres a few of mine like that ...
