If I only got that many eggs from my wyandottes..... I would be set!
amen ..i cant even get mine to start laying ..lol..i thought i did my homework on this breed but i guess i shouldnt beleave all that i read ..i think next time i'll get some austrolorps..[i think i said that right

..] just for the egg producing ability..i love the columbian wyandottes and the fact they winter well here in ny ..
 
Squatting is an indication of laying soon as well as bright red comb, just watch out for sighting soft unshelled eggs or tiny eggs. We usually find a few soft eggs first then eggs smaller than a quarter. They don't always lay soft ones in nests thinking it's just a call of nature, we found 5 in our run in one day. I have over 400 chickens. I rarely ever find soft eggs. that is a genetic issue and is not a good thing. I do find smaller eggs for the first few eggs but that does not last very long before they get in the swing of things. I don't keep birds that lay soft eggs. I try calcium if that does not work they leave my farm. I don't want to breed them.

DMRippy, 400?? Holy cow!!! I have a giant flock of 25 and only see soft shells when they start to lay. I would not kept a bird who couldn't lay hard shell eggs as well. I do provide oyster shell to help supplement the need for calcium.
