400 chickens is on the low side for me. I think last summer I had about 800 with chicks. They make great compost! LOL. Slowly I am getting my numbers down. I am hoping to get down to 100.... maybe more with chicks and grow out. It is a full time job most of the time. I have done lots of things to reduce the work. Central waterers 5 gal feeders raised pens.....it all adds up to less work. If feeding is up to date I can just collect eggs, but as you guys know there is ALWAYS something that needs to be done with chickens.

I was thinking about laying cement and building a new coop and run on it so clean up would be easier for my 51 chickens and 5 guineas lol.

I have over 400 chickens. I rarely ever find soft eggs. that is a genetic issue and is not a good thing. I do find smaller eggs for the first few eggs but that does not last very long before they get in the swing of things. I don't keep birds that lay soft eggs. I try calcium if that does not work they leave my farm. I don't want to breed them.

x950 million. lol Not only genetic but can be from diet not enough calcium, to much salt, heat, stress, disease primarily respiratory.
DM good luck with getting down to 100 That's like just a few breeds/varieties. That will happen when I am 104.

Hey! I am going to pickup a SPW cockerel from Jerry Foley the first of next month! YEAH! He promises he will fix the lack of silver. He will be a pullet breeder though..... that is fine by me LOL

Cool! Post a pic of him. I would like to see his pattern as well as type. Get that red out

i think i found my first wyandotte egg in my run this morning ..i didnt see who laid it but it was a little small and not dark enough to be a wellie egg ..it was a lite brown or almost pink of almond colored ..i threw it away ..it was very cold and cover in a thick layer of poo..but i feel like maybe my wyandottes are turning a corner now ..
