The Wyandotte Thread

I've finally set up my breed pens for hatching the end of this month....
This photo is most of the Columbian Wyandotte flock out in the lot in front of the barn visiting the heifers...it was a nice day.

Hi! Hoping you can help me. We just hatched 4 bantam partridge wyandottes for my daughters 4h project this year. They are three weeks old. This one stands tall and is noisy... feel like the comb is pinking up a little also... feel it might be a too. But I notice the comb on top has a point that sticks up... would that be a DQ

Hi NanaKat, Do you sell your Columbian eggs or chicks.  I would like to get some Columbians.

I do not sell chicks. There is a long waiting list this year for eggs...so far 8 people, several who have been waiting for a second year.
My CW flock has been a closed flock for over 25 years....passing in entirety thru two breeders to me. The first two did show their Columbian. I am not NPIP yet, so have not shown.
For the past 6 years I have been doing selective breeding to bring the birds back to the Standard of Perfection guidelines. Very few juvenile birds or eggs have left the farm. A very harsh culling process has finally brought the betterment of my breeders.
This year I am going to hatch 200 chicks and will then look at making eggs available.

Three weeks is a little early to make that decision...hold off for a month and post a picture again.
Do keep an eye on the tip...it should curve to follow the contour of the head.
Enlarging the photo I could see that the tip is full and not inverted which would be a definite DQ. There are a few bumps on the surface that would require serious attention. Should they grow into sprigs or extra points, I would cull.

Thank you. this was a worry. We purchased eggs from another 4h guy a few hours away but his fertility was horrible so we only had 4 that made it from his eggs. Trying to get ahold of a few more for showing and breeding stock. This was is acting like a rooster right from the start so thought I would check. Lets hope I have a nice trio otherwise.
