The Wyandotte Thread

Ok, so there are some lessons I don't want to learn the hard way!

With that in mind I want to learn from those more experienced than myself.... There are a handful of Wyandotte breeders out there with websites showing gorgeous birds. Can you guys tell me if you have been happy with what you've purchased from the bigger breeders? (You can PM me with negative as I don't think it is appropriate for a msg board) I'd love to hear the advice from those way smarter than me about chickens!!! Has anyone noticed a particular breeder not living up to reputation? Can I find better quality locally or should I bite the bullet and order off the net?

TIA (oh, btw I want show quality birds to start a small show quality breeding flock)

I love, love, love the Foleys (aka Mrs. Turbo). I'm lucky enough to be within driving distance to their place. They are so patient with my newbie questions and their birds are to die for. www.foleyswaterfowl.com. Check out their blr wyandottes

I have always purchased from Paul's Poultry. Jesse and Tracey have always been more than kind and professional, and I have been extremely happy with their birds. I have never once (in more than three purchases) gotten any birds with illness, mites, etc. They have all been healthy (with the exception of one bird that developed a severely crossed beak which was not present at hatch. From what I understand, it's bound to happen occasionally).

I have heard (and it's just that - hearsay...) that several of the larger breeders buy directly from other breeders lines and sell them as their own. During that process, I've heard that they breed with lower quality stock, or pick through to keep their best birds and sell a majority of birds that would be considered "cull" birds.

With most of the Wyandottes (from what I am learning), it's difficult to tell at hatch exactly who will develop into show quality, and who won't. So, if your goal is to have SQ birds, I would recommend going with a breeder who has constantly produced solid reviews and good looking birds.

I have heard this too! Along with having a flock that their show birds come from and then a flock they sell....which sorta makes sense since u don't want to go to a show and get beat cuz u sold ur best stock to someone else... But I don't want to pay top $$ for a second string hatch.

Pauls says they don't do this but I'm looking for more than 1 breeder to buy from. It wouldn't be an issue if I wanted BLRW but I don't. BLR seems to be hot variety right now and I can't find ones already accepted (SPW and Columbian). Obviously SLW are easy to find.

Idk.. There is big show this fall, and there are some columbians at the local fair in the open show... Gonna watch that tomorrow. Still don't "really" know what is good or bad other than the shape and non-clamped tail.... Anyway, hoping to meet some breeders at sow in fall and tomorrow at fair... We'll see. I figure if they're coming from an hour away to show at the fair they can't be too bad

For any breed it's impossible to tell at hatch who's going to be show quality and who isn't....not just wyandottes. What some people forget is that serious breeders may hatch a hundred or more chicks in any given season and cull down to the best 2 or 3 birds that they feel will do well at shows. You can't expect to buy hatching eggs or 15 chicks and have them all turn out to be SQ.....in fact the odds of any of them being SQ are not very good, but you may get some breeder quality birds that will give you show quality in their offspring. The only way to be sure to get SQ birds from a breeder is to buy started birds that have already done well at some shows.

If you start with stock (eggs or chicks) from a reputable breeder with a proven record, you will be one step closer to the quality you want. You can buy mature show quality, not know what you are doing and in less than two generations have lower than pet quality. Yes, start with good quality. But also learn your standard for your breed. Learn what you need to know to produce the best quality.
