The Wyandotte Thread

Ok, so if I were to buy some chicks at the Ohio Nationals from the sale pens or out of the parking lot, what are some of the things I should look for/know to make sure I'm not making a huge mistake? Thinking maybe this should be its own thread, but in this case I mean it in regards to Wyandottes and purchasing quality breeding stock that can produce show stick....

Get the standard and read up on the wyandotte. Visit some local show sand look over the wyandottes. Be an educated buyer. Learn something about the seller. Buy only from a reputable breeder, not a dealer. Lots of dealers selling what somene else raised. Search online for everything about wyandottes you can. It would be best to purchase from a breeder before the show and just pick them up at the Ohio national.

anyone have the link to the Wyandotte Breeders Club of America page? I tried to find it and all I can see are forums... I'd like to join.

Thank you SO much! I don't know why I couldn't find it... Maybe it was adding the "club" idk, but thank you, thank you!!!!

I have heard this too! Along with having a flock that their show birds come from and then a flock they sell....which sorta makes sense since u don't want to go to a show and get beat cuz u sold ur best stock to someone else... But I don't want to pay top $$ for a second string hatch.

Pauls says they don't do this but I'm looking for more than 1 breeder to buy from. It wouldn't be an issue if I wanted BLRW but I don't. BLR seems to be hot variety right now and I can't find ones already accepted (SPW and Columbian). Obviously SLW are easy to find.

Idk.. There is big show this fall, and there are some columbians at the local fair in the open show... Gonna watch that tomorrow. Still don't "really" know what is good or bad other than the shape and non-clamped tail.... Anyway, hoping to meet some breeders at sow in fall and tomorrow at fair... We'll see. I figure if they're coming from an hour away to show at the fair they can't be too bad

lol

Everybody's birds came from somewhere...for example my Blacks and Blues. My blacks came from a good rooster owned by Jim Konecny crossed on my Blues, my blues came from a woman out in Texas a few years back. Now the blacks and blues that I have now (4 gens later) probably reflect what I envision as a good wyandotte and I have been working hard on correct leg color on my blues....type was already pretty darn good when I got them. My SLW came from 4 different sources all mixed together....Bill Guardhouse, Lora Kershaw, Gary Overton, and a 12 yr old boy from Indiana that was at a show (we never could figure out where he got them, but they were good)....now when I buy a bird like that directly from someone I dont show them and claim them as "mine", the old school wyandotte exhibitors really get bent out of shape when you do so....so out of respect I try to show only wyandottes that I raised, and if I do show one of the birds I purchased I make a point to let everyone know where the bird came from. I have shipped plenty of birds and chicks to big time breeders and gotten breeder birds from them.....it is smart to always look for a good new bloodline to add to yours that may have something your birds are missing.

I have been shocked at all the "hearsay" and nasty rumors that competiing "homestead hatcheries" will spread about you, especially if you are more successful at filling orders for the difficult to raise wyandottes like the Silver Laced Wyandottes, the only thing that I can tell you is that I sell SLW chicks from the same SLW that I show. Anyone that buys chicks from me is welcome to come see my breeding pens and what the breeders look like, we are biosecure...so dont get mad if I start spraying oxine mix all over you as soon as you pull in the driveway and you will not be allowed to actually enter the breeding pens.

This year we will show what we have. Next year we will show what we hatched. This is our first year back with poultry after a few years of custodial issues. Some of our birds are really good....some not so good. Guess the judges will decide. The kids will show all they can and I will show the rest. They are still learning. Guess we all are.

I have heard rumors for years. The only rumor I ever believed was that Mr. Suitor of Okmulgee, Oklahoma was dishonest. That I learned first hand as a teenager. He passed away a few years ago. He sold other folks culls as show quality for a huge profit. At age 14 I bought a pair of Golden Sebrights from Suiter for $50 for the pair. Later I realized it was worth less than $5 a pair.

Most rumors have very little or no basis of truth.

There was a breeder of Jersey Giants that had several grades of her birds. Most never obtained her best until after she was gone. I have seen some purchase excellent show quality breeders. Two years later they wondered why they never won. They knew nothing about breeding the birds. To be successful in the show room, one must be successful in the chicken coop. We are most inpatient on the APA. We want the Standard yesterday. That slow boat from China is for the birds. It is very difficult to pick out what we want to keep from memory of a Standard I owned 15 years ago. The Standard will arrive when it arrives, so we are culling to the best we can. Will learn soon if we were right or not.

It would be best if we stayed to facts and not rumors.

Fact is the new 2010 Standard of Perfection IS on a slow boat from China, read it in the Poultry Press!

When the rumors get vicious...well it just get on your nerves..one thing after another..

I see you like buckeyes, we have a friend here in Kentucky that raises them named Laura Haggerty.....she rocks!
