The Wyandotte Thread

No, I got silver laced from Meyer and they're pretty rough looking. Hope you have better luck from McMurray!

This is my girl Kitkat -she's one of two golden laced, the other is Sunny. I also have two silver laced. Kitkat has always had this mullet look, but now Sunny is losing her "face" feathers. Is this a genetic characteristic? The silver laced are just fine. Any thoughts?

I have. When we first started with chickens we got a bunch of hatchery birds. I wouldn't breed any of them, though.

Two of them are actually fairly decent in looks and make great broodies. Unfortunately, they both lay somewhat misshapen eggs. Here's a pic of Midnight, brooding a bunch of olive egger chicks:

And here's Sunset, brooding with her Australorp friend (Cinderella):

The third GLW - well, she's turned out to be the worst of the bunch. She actually had the best color balance of the three when she was in her first year. She laid eggs then, too. The she had this WEIRD molt. Her feathers came back in very poorly. Instead of being fluffy, there's just a tuft at the end and most of the shaft is empty. A few feathers on her neck came in white, too. Here are some pics I posted when she first grew them in:

Very odd. And since then, she's not laid one single egg. Nor does she brood eggs. She just marches around, looking freaky, demanding treats. Funny... she still gets them.

She was pretty but had a large comb. If she had not layed eggs you could have passed her for young roo. The silver I got had right size comb from them.

I have BLRW and I will be getting some blues from a breeder at next swap. Can anyone tell me a little more about them and what to look for and so on? I have never seen them in person so I want to know what to look for before I get them. They will be young day olds up to 5 wks I think.
Any help would be great! Thanks

OK...this may have been mentioned before, but I really don't feel like reading 130 pages of posts...

At what age to Wyandotts start to lay (on avg of course)?

We picked up 6 SLW at the feed store in May (2.50ea hard to pass up) and they seem to grow a bit slower than most breeds I've had...just wondered if they are pretty late layers too?

Thanks!
