The Wyandotte Thread

I bought BLRW eggs from a breeder near San Diego, CA and they were HUGE! They were so big and heavy that I thought they were going to fall out of my turner!

On the other hand, my Blue Wyandottes lay a small egg

Yes, I'm in the process of selling mine also. I'm going to focus on improving the BLRWs and I have plans to purchase Silver Penciled Wyandottes from Paul's Poultry as soon as the weather cools down and he starts shipping again

I'm also adding true Ameraucanas to the mix, so I will have lots of fun projects going on!

This very interesting. I am glad to hear about the egg size. It helps in my choice of future purchases. So far my three BLRW are pretty 18 weekers. I did have GLW a few years back and as far as I can remember I was happy with their eggs. Pretty is important but eggs are more important to me.

Absolutely. I'm in the process of deciding on a breed, BLRW among them. The size of the egg matters.

I've read Wyandottes go broody frequently. Is this true? If so, are they adamant about setting or easily broken up?

My first BLRW pullet to start laying has been laying for a few weeks now and I'm happy to say that her eggs are already almost as large as those of my mature Buff Orpington hens. The first eggs were almost as small as those from my bantam cochins but each week they're a little bigger. In fact, it's almost to the point now where the only way I can "Splash's" eggs from my BO's is by color. Splash's eggs are a little bit lighter.

Nancy I like your picture and am happy to hear the good news about the BLRW eggs size. I guess that I'll find out one of these days (more like in October) but I can wait and the time passes too quickly anyway
