The Wyandotte Thread

Hi,

Guess what? I decided to buy some Silver Penciled Wyandottes from Paul's poultry, but when I called them a few days ago, Paul said it is too hot to ship and now I have to wait until Nov. 1st!!

That will be a tough time to raise chicks, but I may still go ahead and get them!

I decided that I just have to have some!! Now I have to find homes for about 5 or 6 BLRW rooster chicks!!

Welcome, Mrs Foote, to the Wyandotte thread.
I'm also on the Brahma thread and responded to you on that one too.

Our SLW is one of the best of the bunch (you can see her on post #1309 & her egg!).
She is second only to our Dark Brahma.
Our GLW is smaller, slightly more aloof, and is bottom of the pecking order. But boy, is she pretty (see my avatar).

Generally speaking, I think you'd be happy with either breed. I love their personalities as well as their differences.

Thank you obviously as you could see from my other posts my Brahma is my favorite but he is a he...and we cant keep roos in the city sooo...there is a guy here with a young flock about the same age as my own and he is down sizing so....I'm thinking of getting 2 or so because I know for a fact he has hens lol

Several feed stores in the SW order from Privett Hatchery. At ours local feed store you can place an order specially for you but the orders are placed only when they put in their seasonal orders. I am on their web site and they have made changes but it still does not work correctly. I have been thinking of sending a SASE so that I can see exactly what they sell. I ordered six BLRW pullets from Stombergers along with other breeds and I like my five splash girls who remain after I culled one which had a single comb. They are 17 weeks old and as soon as they start laying, I will like them even more !

I've heard several times that Privett sends better Wyandottes than other hatcheries. Mine are absolutely, definitely pet quality. Wouldn't change them though. We were hoping to get a blue with the bunch but got the SLW & GLW that got sent to the feed store at the same time so they could all grow similarly.

I realize there is an average weight for wyandottes, but can they get too heavy? Can they get too big (meaning only weigh 6.5 but have a ton of feathers where they look huge?).. Some animals have a size restriction, where others seem to feel the bigger the better.

Alright wyandotte owners - - - I have a bone to pick.

My SLW lays the smallest egg of my flock. I have EE's, leghorns, marans and a wyandotte.
She does lay pretty faithfully, but - - - no lie - - my small EE's lay a bigger egg than she does.

I thought Wyandottes were suppose to lay a large egg. My wyandotte's egg is closer to a medium size egg.

My wyandottes lay smaller eggs than my other breeds, especially the first year. By the time they're on their 2nd or 3rd year of laying tho the eggs are bigger....never extra large tho.
