The Wyandotte Thread

Carmen, my 39 week old Blue Wyandotte, laid her first egg today! This is the girl:

Thank you, Nava. I love their little personalities. I was just reading a thread about co-existing with nature. These kids are confined to a chicken-wire fenced wooded area and I like to sit with them and offer treats. They are such fun!

I am lovin' this thread!! I had planned on getting some Wyandottes, SL and GL. But now that I've seen the BLR...

Gotta have some! I'm THINKING about maybe showing one day, so I want to get some nice ones. UGH, I can't wait to get my coop built!!

Nice looking hen I've been trying to improve on the lacing on my blues. They lay like crazy for me.

Thanks cedar post! Glad to know she'll be a good layer... she took long to begin.

Yours are more beautiful with their lacing. Maybe yours are also more blue? My girl is really more of a silver-gray color, when you look at her in sunlight. She's a hatchery bird, so not laced.

I'm so excited! I have 10 GLW ordered to arrive in early March (20 actually, but a friend is taking 10 and I'm taking 10). I can't wait! This is our maiden voyage into chickens.

So, here's a newbie question. If one has GLW hens, and crosses them with, say, a BL or SL rooster, are the resulting chicks purebred or mutts?

They're still pure wyandottes. SLW roo over GLW hens will yield SLW female offspring and male offspring that are split for gold (They look like bad SLWs with reddish/yellow bleeding in hackle feathers). I

much about BLR genetics, but I know you *can* breed GLW with BLRW. I *think* the problem is you'll get a weaker colour and it's desirable with a deep red colour in BLRWs...

Feel free to expand & correct anyone
