The Wyandotte Thread

Thanks for all the helpful advice.

I am looking for a flock block and I opened the door and let the chickens out of the chicken tractor. There are 18 chickens in an 8 X 10 foot chicken tractor.

They started the pecking back in the brooder. They stayed in there too long due to all the bad weather.

Does anyone have a picture of how a Wyandottes tail should look? I thought my girls had nice-looking, open tails but after reading I am thinking maybe they're a little too closed?

Also, does anyone know if Buffs are acceptable for showing? I think it'd be great to have one of my girls shown if they're good enough.

You have too many for that size pen, we use 10x10 enclosures for our big birds and find that anymore than 7 reduces laying, fertility, and will often start pecking.

I have a question about the flock block. We got one, and the label says for chickens over 18 weeks. My chickens are about 10 weeks. Is there something in the flock block that will be a problem for the younger chicks?

Added calcium maybe? There's a whole thread about homemade flock blocks with some good recipes, one that is even done in the microwave. But, I haven't tried any of them yet...

based on what you have read the contents. If Calcium is over 3% that is the reason. High calcium while raising a bird can cause problems and shorten lifespan once mature. However at 10 weeks of age they should be able to range some anyway.

Although not perfect, the following pictures are of this years birds...so they are still young, but you can get the idea...should look like a Tee-pee from behind.

I need to join in here. I have a pair of Silver Laced Wyandottes that I hatched about 6 weeks ago. I absolutely love them! Pictures are very hard to get, because the cockerel is camera shy. (I think he has heard that I take a lot of rooster pictures when I'm getting ready to rehome the boys...)

So here's my one picture of the pair, from overhead at bedtime.
