The Wyandotte Thread

Hi everyone, I'm hoping to get your advice on a breeding project I'm thinking of trying. Last spring I had a single Blue Wyandotte hatch that was sent as an extra with a batch of BLRW eggs (all the rest of my flock are BLRW). At 6 months old, I think his type is far better than any of my BLRW and I'm thinking about breeding him with my BLRW and then breeding his offspring back to them to try to improve their type. I have a couple of questions: 1. What do you think of him (really)? Do you think it's worth the effort? 2. Am I right thinking that if I breed him to BLRW his offspring will be solid blue/black/splash, but then if I breed his offspring back to my BLRW they should be laced again?

Any thoughts would be appreciated! I don't want to end up two years down the line with a whole flock of mutt chicks!

He'll do you no good...........best just throw him in a shipping box and send him to me in Texas.

I don't have any other LF Wyandottes, but he'd look great in my yard! LOL! He's a pretty sucker, to say the least.
We have small "dottes" and I would some day love to have BLRW bantams.

To be honest, I'm just having trouble letting this handsome guy go and am desperately looking for an excuse to keep him.

He came from soaringchicks, but she sold all her blues last spring right after I got my eggs from her.

I'm actually already a proud owner of Jerry's e-book! To be honest, I'm just having trouble letting this handsome guy go and am desperately looking for an excuse to keep him.

I can see why, he's very eye-catching. I need to buy Jerry's book as I just bought the Grant Brereton series. 1st time buying an e-book! I have several black bantams from Jerry. I guess you could try and experiment with him, if you must keep him up there in God's Country! When we were driving a truck, we went thru Maine a few times. Had a favorite truck stop in New Hampshire. Spent my birthday up there one year eating "lobsta!"

I actually ended up with all of the Foleys blacks and blues at the end of last summer's hatching orders. He IS nice. If you decide you don't need him, let me know. I have no problem paying for shipping... I like his leg color.

Gorgeous Rooster
I'm no geneticist.... But
Playing with the chicken calculator, it looks to me like, in two years you could have, 10 different colors/patterns
3/8 would be unicolor, 3/8 incomplete laced 1/8 blue unicolor laced, 1/8 BBS laced Red
Unless of course he's s+ under that blue or he's hiding something else.

What did you get for the first generation offspring when you tried this? I only got Unicolor BBS for his first generation offspring, But now I'm wondering if I was wrong. Sometimes the chicken genetics calculator boggles my mind.

At least it's good to know that he'll have a home with colby318 if I decide I'm being foolish wanting to keep him... or perhaps I should just purchase more BBS hatching eggs from colby and try to hatch him some hens? I'm kinda liking that idea...

Yes, that's what I got too. Het for extended black, pattern gene, and mahogany.
Again, I'm no geneticist, also no expert on proper Wyandotte type, maybe I'm wrong, and maybe those few blue laced reds
would include something really special. I think it would be a "breed a lot and cull hard" scenario.
I would get him some nice BBS hens if he were mine. But I wouldn't tell you what to do.
