The Wyandotte Thread

My SLWs will be a year old next month..and I am thrilled with them! Out of the 12 That I started with - only three were pullets - just my luck, LOL!!

Here is the roo I kept (chosen for his very respectful attitude towards people - and "the ladies"). I'll take my good camera out tomorrow (these are from my cell phone), but I wanted to get some input on what I should work to improve...and also if you see some good things about him, I'm glad to hear that as well.

I'm also looking to get some new chicks from Paul's Poultry (he lives a couple of miles from me) , so I'm not doing too much in-breeding.

I'm also loading a short video so you can see him - and the girls :

Here are a couple of pics of the girls - the SLW on the outside of the run (trying to throw-down with her sister from another mister) is from hatchery stock I purchased three years ago - I liked her so much, I decided to upgrade with some good stock!

I love the SLW pics. They are beautiful! Thank you for sharing them.

I currently have 1 GLW. I LOVE her so much. And I would like to get more. However, my daughter's 4H project is chickens. which means that we will be showing some. None of our 4 hens are show quality. I can only get 2 more hens since we live in city limits. And I do not know any good Dotte breeders in this area. The man I bought our hens from raises them for eggs, and he has a mix of breeds running in the same flock. Where do I start looking for good quality hens to purchase? And is there a specific place I need to look to get standards that I need to look for?

thanks.

I am getting tired of SC males with nastily frostbitten combs, and have been thinking of rose or pea combers, poss. Wyandottes.

BUT I MUST HAVE EGGS IN PLENTY. One thing that makes me pause about them is that i have never heard anything but that Wyandottes are unpleasant, 'witchy', stand-offish...

My gorgeous Clearview Hatchery Strain RIRs are so sweet...................

any thoughts?

Did you see my video, above? Mine are pretty much un-handled (meaning - I don't treat them like pets....I just have too many to do that)....and I find these to be calm, curious, and friendly.

I also have GLW that are the same way.

As for eggs, the three girls are just shy of one year old - and I'm consistantly getting two eggs a day....pretty impressive considering they are such nice birds.

Maybe others have had different experiences....
