The Wyandotte Thread

i'm new to wyandottes, I'm determining how high my fence needs to be for their pen, are they good at flying? Or will a 6ft fence be high enough to hold them?

I think it depends on they type of Wyandottes you have...

I have one SLW & one GLW that are from a hatchery - they fly pretty well and can manage to get themselves up to about 6 feet (I have a 6' chain link fence around my coops - and they make it up there if they are motivated enough).

I have four SLW that are from a well-respected breeder here on BYC. They are very type-y and are really to heavy to fly - they might make it 2-3 feet high.

thanks! I have 5 silver laced and 1 golden laced (hes the odd ball hehe) and they all came from a hatchery.
I guess I'll go ahead and invest in a 6 fence, though it sounds like it might need to be higher, I just forsure
wont go any lower than 6ft. thanks for the help!

To the best of my knowldge, Jessie Paul (Paul's Poultry-Jessie is the man), are not breeding/selling birds anymore. They still run the Bidbird.com auction site however.

Depending on what you're looking for, perhaps you could try Jerry Foley or PeakyBeaky.

Duane Urch does have nice birds, but I have no idea how long his selling season is.

Hope that helps.

My two hatchery SLW never made it to the top of the 6 ft fence around their run. They're better flyers than my Paul's birds, but they still can't really fly. My Ameraucanas are WAY better than any of them.

Okay I feel better about using a 6ft fence now! But my ameraucanas are only 11weeks old and they fly every where! instead of walking 10 feet, theyll walk 5 and fly 5! its crazyy! I'm going to have to build a special pen 8ft tall just for them!

Yes...thank ypu, it does help. They will probably be happy for me to stop emailing them every month....but if they'd told me, I would have stopped emailing! Oh well.

The beautiful birds I have now are from Foley's...and I love them!! I just want to get some "new" blood so I'm not in-breeding too much.

I have Duan's email...I'll give him a try. : thanks, again!

thanks i love my chickens! I wish more people my age had them, but everyone else is too involved in the college lifestyle to care about little ol' chicks! and the ones not in college seem to need them the most to teach them responsibility!
