The Wyandotte Thread

I was told blue laced. I trimmed their flight wings so they're not showing obviously. :)

They are both the Splash color

Blue Laced Red Wyandottes come in Blue laced red, Black laced red and White laced red (splash.)

Duane Urch has fabulous birds. I had a breeding pair of gold laced from him. I just didn't have the room for another variety so Jerry Foley found another breeder who was eager for them. There are people who will sell the black version of the blue laced red as gold laced and many other people are none the wiser. You need to start with good breeding stock to begin with. Look at the silver laced on the post above this. Those are true wyandottes. A last note, according to the breed standard, a rose comb is supposed to have bumps on it, one that doesn't is called a putty comb and it is a fault. I'm going to send you a pm

Just wanted to say, I'm loving all the pics. I just love wyandottes. They are actually what got me into chickens.

Ok. Another stupid/confusing newbie question. I do have a calll/email in to Duane Urch about getting some of his GLW, but I haven't seen pics of Urch wyandottes, so I'm pretty much going by his reputation on here as to what I may end up with. I have been advised to NOT cross my GLW with SLW to improve type. According to the chicken calculator, it would take approximately 3 generations to get back to pure GLW roo. I don't mind the work, it just seems like alot to get to a color that already exists. As popular as the color is, I'm really suprized that all I'm findig are hatchery birds. My question is, what about some black laced red? I know that they carry the?mahogany? gene but it seems to me that it would be easier to choose the lighter colored chicks to go on with. If I bought chicks or eggs, it would be possible to keep only the BLR if nature's dice land accordingly and I even had some. I don't know. I seem to be running into roadblocks alot. I didn't think finding quality GLW would be so hard. It really just makes me want to work on them all the more. The more I learn, the more I see what I don't like in my own flock. My GLW cockerels comb is too bumpy, my girls tails are not full enough. In two of the three SLW cockerels, the comb has a dip. The best laced one is the worst, the least typy one has the best comb.....grrrrr. Color and lacing are great on all of them. I really need some help here. Anyone out there have some words of wisdom or just some "you go girl"s??

) I'll have photos up soon!

I finished my test run on the incubator and it went pretty well. Now, I have an order for some eggs from Mr. Urch and I should be getting my wyandottes from Privett/Welp next week. I am so psyched up for this. It seems like I have been waiting forever. I think Christmas comes faster than baby chicks. What do you guys think?

Hey, you guys....I have been trying to reach someone at Paul's Poultry. They are only 15 minutes from my house....practically right in my back yard this whole time! I am looking for some really super nice birds to augment the gorgeous ones I already have....and hoping to compete at the state fair next year.

I do not have/cannot find a phone number to call them on...does anyone know if he is still in business? Anyone purchased from them this season?

I really would love to buy from them!

UPDATE: 3/17 - they are in business and will have chicks to sell this season! Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!
