The Wyandotte Thread

I got an wyandotte hen today! I love her already! Probably not show quailty, although I wish I could show sometime. Do you think I could enter her in just some little town fair or something? Something small? Here she is:

Apprentally she is from a breeder in missouri. I don't think she's really show quality, but maybe better than hatchery quality? She doesn't really have that big wyandotte fluff-ball shape yet- but she isn't laying yet, and so she may still fill in.

She's from hatchery stock. Maybe 2nd generation though. It looks like she's going to enjoy the good life.

Beautiful birds! I love this thread, been going through all the photos. Everybody's are lovely! I can't wait until mine are grown. I have 5 GLW's and 5 SLW's, all 2 weeks old. Straight run, from a breeder. It'll be interesting to see which are hens and which are roos! I already have a few guesses :)

Here they are checking out my dog...who was pretty confused as to why her old kennel is filled little aliens LOL

Just wanted to say, I'm loving all the pics. I just love wyandottes. They are actually what got me into chickens.

Ok. Another stupid/confusing newbie question. I do have a calll/email in to Duane Urch about getting some of his GLW, but I haven't seen pics of Urch wyandottes, so I'm pretty much going by his reputation on here as to what I may end up with. I have been advised to NOT cross my GLW with SLW to improve type. According to the chicken calculator, it would take approximately 3 generations to get back to pure GLW roo. I don't mind the work, it just seems like alot to get to a color that already exists. As popular as the color is, I'm really suprized that all I'm findig are hatchery birds. My question is, what about some black laced red? I know that they carry the?mahogany? gene but it seems to me that it would be easier to choose the lighter colored chicks to go on with. If I bought chicks or eggs, it would be possible to keep only the BLR if nature's dice land accordingly and I even had some. I don't know. I seem to be running into roadblocks alot. I didn't think finding quality GLW would be so hard. It really just makes me want to work on them all the more. The more I learn, the more I see what I don't like in my own flock. My GLW cockerels comb is too bumpy, my girls tails are not full enough. In two of the three SLW cockerels, the comb has a dip. The best laced one is the worst, the least typy one has the best comb.....grrrrr. Color and lacing are great on all of them. I really need some help here. Anyone out there have some words of wisdom or just some "you go girl"s??

I am new to raising chickens to a breed standard, but I come from the world of show rabbits. I was told/taught along time ago that before you worry about how you paint the house, it has to be built structurally sound. If you are trying to develop your own lines (me too), then you want to get stock from a few places and start selectively breeding. We called it moving down the pedigree. Color in my opinion should be the thing you work for last. Excellent type comes first. Then the trimmings. Cross breeding within colors(not breeds), as long as you are not going to sell the hatching eggs or are completely candid about what the customer is getting, only helps your process. Again, I say this as a complete newbie in the poultry game and hope some of the veterans will weigh in on this as well.

Thanks for the response. I actually breed collies and color is the last thing we choose for. Temperment and structure are first on the list. That's why I'm really at a loss. I'm just getting mixed messages. I want type first, but when I suggest crossing colors I'm told not to. That seems to be near impossible with GLW. I would definately be honest with my buyers and only sell chicks as egg/meat birds until I had what I wanted.
