Welcome to the world of Silver Penciled. Mine have always been very broody but do not let that convince you they really want to do that. I never have set eggs under them because they always quit about halfway through.

Good to know. I don't USUALLY trust broodies. I have let a couple brood babies and 1 did a very LOUSY job, the other was great. Most of what I hatch I NEED so I like to know they will really have a good chance of hatching.

You need a couple of American Game hens Most broody hens in the world & good mothers too I get egg customers built up & they go broody on me They have raised as many chicks as I let them lol

You need a couple of American Game hens

Most broody hens in the world

& good mothers too I get egg customers built up & they go broody on me

They have raised as many chicks as I let them lol

I used Cochin bantams when I had them, they always did a great job. Big Cochins do well also but can break eggs because of their size.
You are right about game hens, they will hatch out anything underthem and be the feistiest mothers too!

Could some of you more experienced Wyandotte breeders give me some constructive criticism on my Sammy boys head/beak/comb, etc. ? Also, besides his white tail, is his Buff coloring good or just too red. My hens are much lighter and without the darker red Sam has.

He's approximately 8 motnhs old now.

He's approximately 8 motnhs old now.

I don't have Buff Wyandottes, but I can offer these comments. The comb tip might be a tad high, but the overall shape and texture is right. He has good face color and earlobes are right. Eye color is good also. The wattles should be rounded and fine textured and free of feathers and free of wrinkles. It's hard to tell from the head shot photo but they appear okay. The left side might be shorter than the right...hard to tell.
Sammie has a nice neck and overall type is good with a broad breast and level back...except for the rise on his tail. Should be about 40 degrees above level and his tail appears to be closer to 70 degrees.This could lower as he ages. I don't know about the white tail and rump feathers on a buff bird. The orange yellow is in a nice color range with a nice gold cast. Nice color and luster. There is a little reddish cast on the wings, but it's doesn't appear to be too red. Nice yellow legs with nice straight toes.
At 8 months, your roo will go thru more changes as he ages.

Thank you very much NanaKat. He's not a pure Buff but his mother was. I would like to breed him back to his sisters and hopefully improve the white-ness of the tail(lose the lacing). For a white tailed Buff bird I don't know what the 'standard' is for the rump feathers/fluff, but I'd like to try to breed for white tails only with buff-colored down & rump feathers.

His tail is high but my hopes it will lower with age aren't. It is improved from his fathers but still long & tall. His sisters have nicer more wyandotte-ish tails, fuller too. As for his wattles, he lose a bit of the left one when he was younger or they'd be identical. that shouldn't matter since he's not going to be shown though. His comb is "cupped" a little, but, his sister's are better... smoother and more rounded on the tops so that should improve combs in the offspring, right?

Do you think his head is wide enough or too small?
