I am looking for a photo of hatchery quality White Wyandottes. Since we use a nationwide network of hatcheries we are looking only for hatchery quality birds. Even if you did not order them from Purely Poultry it is quite likely that we use the hatchery where you got your birds from. Photos used on our website will be compensated $2.00 via pay pal or $3.00 store credit tohttp://www.purelypoultry.com/. Private message me if you have a photo that we can use. Thanks!

ok, i'm curious...

why would the hatcheries want to continue breeding mediocre birds, when it doesn't cost any more to feed and hatch birds with better type?

it would seem to me, a hatchery selling higher quality birds would sell more of them, so...

The better quality birds don't lay as well. So, while it doesn't cost more to raise a good quality bird, in the long run, you don't get as many offspring. So it costs the hatchery more to maintain the flock while getting less profit. I hope that helps!

Beside balance and stance and breadth of head and body, what other characteristics should be considered in Wyandotte 10 week olds and the Cochin chicks the same age?

I want to begin leg banding some of the nicer standard chicks from the CW and the Cochin pens. The SOP and other literature im studying address what the birds should look like at adult size but give little information on early selection.

I know what I like, but would like input from some of the other breeders as to what you look for in selecting thru you younger chicks.

At what age do you begin your selection process.

sorry, i don't know about lf cochins, i just do the bantams, but with any of my breeds, i usually evaluate them at 3 months old for any obvious flaws, then by 4-5 months old you can usually get a good idea what they're going to finish out like, though they are both fairly slow growing, so really you won't see the finished product until near a year IMO.

my dorkings are not quite as slow growing, i evaluate them around the time of first egg, and any keeper roos are evaluated again at a year. the hens seem to fill out a bit more but their overall type doesn't seem to vary much after first egg.(about 5-6 months) but the roosters continue growing until nearly 2.

Wyandotte and LF Cochin do mature over a two year period.
I've been identifying chicks that have "the look" that pleases me and watching them closely. The oldest Wyandotte chicks are from the first hatch this year from pens set up Dec 8, hatching Jan 18. The Cochins started hatching Jan 22.

i have pulled some Wyandotte chicks for comb and two Cochins for angel wing.
Looks like waiting another few weeks is in order. I am rrushing it a little because the brooder room floor is getting crowded due to our strange weather patterns. It's been too cold to move the older birds outside to their grow out pens.
