The Wyandotte Thread

The feathering on the wing is throwing me. The comb screams roo but the wing feathers don't.... they look like a pullet.

Me to. Then I was thinking maybe....he is a pullet breeder.

I have a question about improving type in my BLRW. I am wondering which standard color I could cross with to help improve what I have. I was thinking SLW. Would that work? I know it will take awhile whichever way that I can go but am willing to put in the time. I was thinking gold would reintroduce gold into my flock which I don't want to do. Would Blue or black work? I am not sure how else to go about it other than getting other BLRW stock which seems challenging where I live. Thanks for any ideas!
Also I am looking for some SLW or Blue just because I would like to try my hand at those also. I live in the SW WA area outside of Portland/Vancouver if anyone knows where I can find any nice birds.

According to the chicken calculator and my own research the silver laced will pose the least amount of issues getting back to the color your after. I have a breeding pen of that cross set up now and hope to have the eggs in the incubator this weekend.
This leads me to another topic. In order to get the best wyandottes possible I am going to need to do some color crossing. I was wondering if anyone has undertaken the task of putting up full color pics of chicks to adults for different varieties, to include those not recognized beyond BLR. For instance, in one breeding pen I will (lord willing) wind up with Black Patterned Gold (incomplete) Columbian. Anyone have a pic of a chick or adult like this? Or depending on the turn I take next year I could have a black patterned silver partridge/brown?

I know that I should probably pony up the dough and buy show stock, but I wanna get their on my own. Build the house first worry about paint later. The thing is....well...some swatches would be nice.

Take tons of notes..have a plan, know genetics.
Having swatches will not help you. When ever you dabble with color and lacing the variables are insurmountable. You are talking 5-10 years of patience and hard culling. Color projects take work, knowledge, and notes.

You are correct in that the first step is the *house*. Build your house.

Lets see some house pictures

Does anyone have any pics of wyandottes that are just starting to lay and can show me what their combs look like? Thanks I'm just waiting on mine

The blue gal on the left started laying a few weeks after this photo was taken. The GLW on the right had been laying for about 2-3 months.

The white easter egger started laying right around the time this was taken, I dont know how many weeks she was though.
